THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original: Book
Full Name: Lucius Abraxas Malfoy
Nicknames: None
Age: 42 (b. 1954)
Occupation: Minister of Magic
Alliance: Voldemort. He is a Death Eater.
Pets (if any): None. He uses Ministry owls for communications outside of Death Eater ranks.
Blood Lines: Pure-blood. Son of Abraxas Malfoy and descendant of a very old, pure-blood wizarding families.
Background: Lucius Malfoy was born into the lap of luxury. His father, Abraxas, had never worked a day in his life due to a vast family fortune accumulated over many centuries and was wisely invested by their ancestors. Malfoy Manor was home to the family for many generations and came fully equipped with its own line of servants. The Malfoys, being an old wizarding family were able to keep a house elf to do their bidding around the home. Gerda had been serving the family since Abraxas was a young man, her mother doing the job before her. Lucius took full advantage of her enslavement and, like his father, fiercely mistreated her.
His opinion of house elves was not the only thing Lucius inherited from his father. He was also raised to believe that bloodlines were everything in the wizarding world. Anything less than pure-blood and that person weren’t worth the air in their lungs. It was positively out of the question for a pure-blood wizard to marry below their rank. Lucius lapped up this ideology like a thirsty pup, thoroughly enjoying the feeling of superiority.
He took these view with him when, at the age of eleven, he started attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He, like all the Malfoys before him, was sorted into the Slytherin House and it was there that he would meet the people that would alter the course of his life forever.
Of course, many people had heard of a mysterious person calling themselves Lord Voldemort and campaigning for a new regime. It seemed he held the same pure-blood ideals as the Malfoys and several other old wizarding families. For the young Slytherins at Hogwarts, nothing could be more impressive than supporting this new power. It was naturally kept under wraps, as most of the wizarding community considered it a threat that needed to be quelled, but Lucius Malfoy was just one of many students to fall under the ‘spell’ of Voldemort.
Lucius did very well in school, and in his fifth year he was made a prefect. He was also inducted into Professor Slughorn’s elite Slug Club. Slughorn was good friends with Abraxas Malfoy and was always keen to ally himself with promising youth. Lucius had many friends in the Slytherin house, including the Lestrange brothers and two out of the three Black sisters. Narcissa Black in particular caught his attention. She was a year younger, but more beautiful than any girl he’d ever known. It wasn’t long before the two became a couple. He would also become a mentor of sorts for younger students like Avery, Mulciber and Severus Snape.
Around 1970, Lord Voldemort had gained a large following and upon graduating Hogwarts, Lucius joined his ranks and became a Death Eater. It wasn’t long before he began to rise up in rank, his prowess at the Imperius Curse and fierce devotion to the cause quickly promoting him from Muggle torture to a member of Voldemort’s inner circle. Lucius was just 21 years old when he was branded with the Dark Mark.
In the fall of 1978, his father Abraxas fell ill with a serious case of Dragon Pox.
Though he was taken to St. Mungo’s for treatment, his advanced age left him unable to fight off the infection. Knowing his time was short, he encouraged his son to settle down and marry his pure-blood girlfriend, Narcissa Black. The Black family was even more Ancient that the Malfoys and it was a more than suitable match. The bonus to their relationship was it was the first in the Malfoy line not to be arranged. Lucius truly was in love with Narcissa and had been since their days at Hogwarts. They married shortly before the death of Abraxas, allowing Lucius to grant his father’s dying wish.
They inherited Malfoy Manor and all its fortune along with a new house elf, Dobby, only son of Gerda. He was not treated any better than his mother. Lucius found a way to balance his duties as a Death Eater and his responsibilities as a husband and in June of 1980, Narcissa give birth to a son, Draco. Lucius could not have been happier and was intent to spoil his son the way his own father had spoiled him. Draco would never want for anything.
However, in the fall of the very next year, something happened that could have destroyed all of his plans. Lord Voldemort was vanquished. Names of Death Eaters were being discovered every day and they no longer had the fear of the Dark Lord to protect them. There was no way Lucius could allow himself to be imprisoned, abandoning his new family. Try as he may there was no avoiding it. He was brought before the Ministry as an accused Death Eater and insisted that he was under the Imperious Curse the whole time and had never intended to commit any of the accused acts. This story was sufficient to the Ministry, perhaps because of his family background and promised donations, and Lucius was cleared of all charges.
His acquittal did not make Lucius humble, however. It only boosted his ego. In the years following the Dark Lord’s disappearance, he became a very prominent figure in the Wizarding community, making considerable donations to both the Ministry and St. Mungo’s. he was also induceted onto the Hogwarts His wife and young son wanted for nothing and in no time at all, it was time for Draco to attend Hogwarts. He sent his son off to his first year, knowing that he would be respected by all in the Slytherin house. It was Draco’s return home the following spring that left Lucius disconcerted. Harry Potter, the child responsible for the Dark Lord’s fall, had also begun his schooling. Naturally, he and Draco had quickly become bitter enemies.
It was this fact that brought Lucius to cause a bit of trouble at Hogwarts. Being on of Voldemort’s most loyal followers, the Dark Lord had entrusted certain objects to Lucius’ care. One of these was an old diary Voldemort had kept while in school. Lucius knew the diary was a very powerful dark relic and also knew that his master was the Heir of Slytherin. He knew that the book was capable of possession and, put into the right hands, would bring forth the monster held captive within the Chamber of Secrets. When he took Draco shopping for his second year at school, Lucius found just the right person.
Arthur Weasley, a pure-blood wizard but the consummate blood traitor, had been giving Lucius quite a bit of trouble. He had conducted several raids searching for dark objects that would insinuate their owners. Lucius had sold several at Borgin and Burkes during this particular visit and was actually pleased to run into Arthur at Flourish and Blotts later that same day. It was the perfect opportunity to cause trouble for a most hated man. With ease, he slipped the diary into the dilapidated cauldron of Arthur’s young daughter and watched as the school was thrown into chaos.
In addition to facilitating the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, he also spearheaded a campaign to oust Albus Dumblebore as the Headmaster of Hogwarts. Members of the Board who did not agree with his plan were faced with threats against their families of they did not sign the order. Lucius also found time to aid Draco in his fight against the Potter boy. When he learned that Potter had been made Seaker of the Gryffindor quidditch team in his first year, he bribed the Slytherin team with seven brand new Numbus 2001 brooms to make Draco their Seaker.
This year would have gone just as he planned, except the diary was more than just a relic. It not only possessed young Ginny Weasley, but was about to bring Voldemort back when it was defeated by none other than Harry Potter. When the school Governors learned of Ginny being taken by the ‘monster’, Dumbledore was immediately called back to the school, much to the dismay of Lucius. When confronted, Dumbledore explained Harry’s triumph and Lucius learned that his own house elf had been trying to save Potter after learning of Lucius’ plan back at the Manor. Infuriated, Lucius planned to punish Dobby worse than he ever had, but again was thwarted by Potter. In returning the tattered diary to him, Harry had hidden a sock in it’s pages. When Lucius passed the book off to Dobby, he inadvertently freed his tortured servant. Enraged, he made to curse the boy, but was stopped by the elf’s immense power. Defeated, he left for home, hating the Potter boy more than ever.
The next year passed without much event. Lucius knew very well that Sirius Black had never been a Death Eater, but it was with pleasure that he saw the man pursued so ardently by the Dementors. Upon learning of the location of the Quidditch World Cup the following summer, he and his fellow Death Eaters concocted a little plan to stir things up. Dressed in their old garb, they attacked a Muggle family and set fire to much of the camp ground. They did not expect to see the Dark Mark that night, as it had not been set in the sky since the Dark Lord vanished and it caused them to panic and flee the scene. Little did they know the far greater plan that had been set into motion.
In June of 1995, Lucius felt the faded mark on his arm burn for the first time in 13 years. Loyal as he was, he immediately apparated to the location he was called and there before him stood the Dark Lord, risen again. He was filled with terror at the sight of Lord Voldemort. He had renounced his name publicly, and this was not something the Dark Lord overlooked. Lucius implored him that he had never given up the old ways and was luckily forgiven and restored to his high rank. It was with anguish that Lucius watched the Potter boy escape death again that very night. He wanted nothing more than to see the bothersome boy killed.
Lucius was in for some punishment when Voldemort discovered his diary had been destroyed. He had not explained the full extent of its powers to Malfoy, but was enraged just the same when he learned that his servant had not cared for it as instructed. But Lucius was too important to the master plan to do away with completely. He was still a faithful servant. In the summer of 1996, several Hogwarts students were kidnapped from the Ministry enforced summer camp. Though they were eventually rescued by The Order, the Ministry was secretly falling under Death Eater control. The entire scandal was covered up quickly and it seemed as it things had gone back to normal.
Voldemort kept Lucius out of the kidnapping for he had much greater plans for him. Soon after the incident, Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic, mysteriously disappeared. The truth was the Minister had been murdered, but with was all cleverly covered up. When it came time to appoint a new Minister, who could fit the job better than Lucius Malfoy? He had been gaining favor in the Ministry for years and with the Death Eaters now in control, it was easy to get him the job. He was more then eager to accept it. With Dumbledore gone from Hogwarts, it was easy to control the school as well. On Voldemort’s orders, Bellatrix Lestrange was disguised as a Muggleborn and given the job of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. He was now Minister, Voldemort was almost as powerful as he had been before and Lucius could see nothing but glory coming his way when the plan was finally revealed.
Personality: Lucius is slippery in every sense of the word. He is cunning and persuasive and easily makes himself seem trustworthy and honest. His voice is smooth and inticing. He is an imposing and powerful man who knows it and has arrogance pouring out of his ears. He has been bred with a kind of class that is only found in the oldest and most conceited wizarding families.
On the other hand, he is very loyal when he sees that he stand something to gain from his allegiance. He stood to lose everything when the Dark Lord fell, so it made perfect sense to switch his alliance, when he really never stopped holding Voldemort’s ideals. He believes that anything less than pure-blood is scum. A Muggle-born is as bad as a Muggle and the same goes for blood traitors.
His family life is somewhat different. While he can appear to be a very cold person, he truly does love his family. He will do anything for the well-being of his wife and son and sees to it that they have little to worry about. His fierce devotion to them is about the only thing that could sway him from the loyalty to Lord Voldemort.
Appearance: Lucius is a relatively tall man, standing at just under 6’. He had a slender build and his lack of real muscle mass proves that he, like his father, has never worked a day in his life. His whitish-blonde hair falls slightly past his shoulders and it is always perfectly coifed. His eyes are a cold grey that stand out against his pale skin and they are a trait that he clearly passed on to his son.
Everything about him exudes class, from his strong and sophisticated gait to the expensively tailored style of all his clothing. He insists on nothing but the best and never, ever would be seen in Muggle clothing. He is typically found wearing black, but will don the occasional silver and green of his Hogwarts house. Nowadays, much of his clothing is adorned with the Minister’s crest. He also carries a wand of elm and dragon heartstring purchased at Ollivander’s.
Sample: Rain pattered against the window pane as a flash of light appeared in the distance. None of it was real, however. It was simply an enchantment placed on the window in the Minister’s office. Made an underground establishment feel much less dreary and dank, when it wasn’t storming. On this other side of the room, a door creaked open revealing a man in a long, expensive travelling cloak.
Lucius Malfoy entered the office and immediately unfastened the tie of the cloak, hanging it on a peg near the door. It was only his second day of Minster of Magic, but already he felt that the space was his. It was the sort of confidence he’d had since he was a young boy being spoiled by his father. He glanced at the unpleasant view outside his enchanted window as he crossed to the ornate desk. Damn Maintenance wizards…he thought, taking a seat behind the desk.
A large envelope sat on the top of a substantial stack of papers. It was addressed to the Minister from the Muggle Liaison office. Lucius rolled his eyes, knowing what the envelope must contain. Upon his election, he was briefly informed of a task related to the Muggle Prime Minister. Evidently, when a new Minister for Magic is chosen, it was his duty to meet with the Prime Minister to discuss the state of things. Associating with a Muggle was the last thing Lucius Malfoy cared to do. After all, his first year as a Death Eater was spent on Muggle torture. He’d never killed one, but they certainly weren’t worth the lives they lead.
He picked up the envelope, staring at it for a moment before tossing it on the fire. Soon, there would be no need for Muggle Liaisons. When Lord Voldemort’s plan finally came to light, Muggle relations would become little more than slavery, putting the filthy creatures in their place at last.
A knock on the door took Lucius’ attention away from the burning envelope.
“Come in.” he said, loud enough to be heard through the door. A man with long black hair, a beard and a forehead that stretched for days entered the office. Pius Thicknesse cleared his throat before speaking again. “Excuse me, Minister, but we’ve received several owls from Hogwarts about the open Defence Against the Dark Arts position.” he said, disdain mildly detected in his voice. It was clear the Thicknesse wasn’t too pleased with Lucius’ appointment to Minister and his own promotion to the Minister’s Advisor.
“That matter will shortly be resolved. I will be meeting with a promising candidate this afternoon.” Lucius replied with a small smirk. His sister-in-law would indeed teach an interesting class. “Is that all?”
“Yes, Minister.” said Thicknesse, and he left the room, the door clicking closed behind him. Thicknesse, it seemed, could pose a problem for the Death Eaters. Perhaps… Lucius thought with a grin…It’s time he learned the power of the Imperius Curse…
