- Background: Elizabeth Catherine Tivoli was born to Carmine Tivoli and Barbara Anne Yeager on June 6, 1970. The daughter of Italian and German immigrants, she was born in Altoona Central Hospital in Altoona, PA, United States of America. When her mother was pregnant with Elizabeth, Barbara was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. After a few risky operations, she recovered and delivered a tiny baby girl. Because Carmine was fighting in Vietnam when Elizabeth was born, he wasn't present when his wife went into labor.
When Elizabeth was two years old, her mother had a relapse from Breast Cancer and died. Her father, now a widower, raised Elizabeth. When Elizabeth was twelve years old, Carmine left the Navy and moved to St. Mary's County, Maryland so he could work a civilian job with the local military base.
Elizabeth's education was mostly American Middle and High Schools. Because there was no evidence of any magical powers when she turned eleven, she continued her Muggle education and eventually went to a local community college.
When Elizabeth was 24 years old, she was hired by a local company to work as a secretary. She could handle answering the telephone, taking notes, keeping meeting hours, and all the usual stuff secretaries do. However, something at work one day made Elizabeth suspicious. One day when the copier wasn't working, Elizabeth tried to check to see if the paper was jammed. Before she knew it, several sparks flew up in the air and printer started working fine. Thinking that she somehow fixed the problem without magical means, Elizabeth continued on without thinking about the incident.
Over the next couple of days, things began acting up. Her personal printer at work went on the fritz several times, but when she asked to get it fixed, nothing was found wrong. Her computer would also randomly do odd things without her pressing any buttons, but when she took it to the company's IT department, they could find nothing wrong.
The series of strange events was not limited work. One night while Elizabeth was visiting her father, the both of them had gone out for dinner when the power in the restaurant kept flickering on and off. Confused, she stared at the lamp's glass shade until it and the light bulb shattered.
Nobody was hurt in that incident, but it made Elizabeth even more suspicious. After a couple of days with no activity, Elizabeth realized that something was "wrong" was when she visited her father. Spending the evening in her old bedroom, she woke up in the middle of the night and found herself floating in mid-air. Elizabeth screamed and when her father rushed in, he saw her hovering over her bed.
After that incident, Elizabeth and Carmine were at a loss. Carmine wanted to take his daughter to a psychiatrist, but Elizabeth refused. That weekend, she went to the local library to look up information on supernatural powers. Sitting at a public terminal, Elizabeth didn't notice a 29-year-old American gentleman looking at her from his computer.
The man introduced himself as Paul Freeman. When he first asked why Elizabeth was looking up things on magical powers, she told him that she was looking up such information for fun. Mr. Freeman, whom she thought was a Muggle, pointed out some better sites that could help her with her search, and the two didn't speak for the rest of the day.
After reading the sites that she had been given, Elizabeth left the library and went back to her apartment. The next night, she found herself hovering in the air over her bed and refused to go back into her bedroom until she could get back to the library. Taking a pencil and paper this, she went back to the sites Paul gave her and began taking down notes. Laying out her problems and details on paper so she could fix them, she didn't notice that Paul had looked over the notes Elizabeth had written, and asked her to come into the quiet, but public area of the library.
When they made it to the spot, Paul told Elizabeth the reason she was having these problems was not because she was crazy, but because she was a witch. Elizabeth was shocked at the idea, and almost laughed in a sharp false tone while Paul looked at her. Her natural reaction was that he was a madman.
Undeterred, Paul then revealed himself to be an American wizard. He told Elizabeth that he could prove his point, and that she was a Noli me tangere witch. Paul explained that Noli me tangere witches and wizards were Muggle-born witches and wizards whose power did not manifest themselves at the normal age of 11 years old. When Elizabeth asked why they didn't, he told them that no one really knew. There were several theories floating around the wizarding version of academia, but there was no exact answer.
Still not believing him, Elizabeth asked Paul to prove his point. Undeterred, he ushered her towards an unused office where no one could see them and cast a Colloportus spell. Asking Elizabeth to open the door, she found that she could not. Paul went onto explain that the door could not be opened with Muggle means. Still thinking that this was a joke, Elizabeth tried again by yanking the doorknob, it still didn't work.
After several failed attempts, Elizabeth's powers leaked out and she unconsciously was able to open the door. When she asked how it was possible that she could do it when she tried before, Paul told her that only a witch or wizard could’ve opened the door because the Colloportus spell bars the door from opening using Muggle means. It was then that Elizabeth finally believed that she was witch...
The next biggest problem was how tell her father about this revelation. Elizabeth invited Paul to her father's house to tell him the truth, but like Elizabeth, Carmine thought Paul was crazy for even suggesting the idea. Hard-headed and stubborn, he refused to believe Paul's words, even when Elizabeth told him that she could be free from a spell that could only be unlocked by magical means. Like any father being told his/her child was different, Carmine demanded Paul show him proof.
Paul obliged him by ushering them into one of the bathrooms downstairs and used the Colloportus spell. Telling Carmine open the door, he found that he couldn't. Several turns of the door handle, yanking, using his body to bash the door open, and a liberal use of profanities he picked up from the Navy, Elizabeth got tired of standing there and opened the door with magical means. With the proof in front of his eyes, Carmine believed Paul.
After the incident, Carmine actively helped his daughter get into Salem Institute, a wizarding school in America. However, as she started the application process, she was called to Washington, D.C. There, she was told her that members of the United States Governing Wizard Body would be sending her to a United Kingdom school called Hogwarts. When she asked why she wasn't going to Salem, she was told that Lucius Malfoy, the Minister of Magic, had heard of her situation and her late power manifestation and thought that Hogwarts would be a better school for her. Halfway suspecting that he was using her for social purposes, Elizabeth accepted the offer, using it as an excuse to go to a country she had never been to before...
Please note that Noli me tangere is Latin for "Do not touch me!" It refers to the dormant powers of such witches and wizards that manifest themselves later in life than most witches and wizards. It is NOT strictly used for religious purposes, as this term was used by the Romans long before Christianity came into practice. - Personality: Because Elizabeth was a working adult, she has often come to view the world in a more "adult" way. She hates foul language and racial slurs, considering them unprofessional. Because of her age, she also values education and learning more than younger students, wanting to go to the best school with the best curriculum for her powers. When she was in a Muggle school, she enjoyed her classes in History and Acting. Her least favorite subjects were science, Foreign Languages, and Math.
In her spare time, Elizabeth likes to read cheesy romance novels and go to museums. She particularly likes going to the Smithsonian to view the Natural and American History Museums. Elizabeth also likes to travel, but has gone to very few places around the world except for Italy, Greece, Vatican City, and Malta.
However, she is not always bookish. Elizabeth's ethics and moral code come from her father, who taught her the basics of military ethics. Elizabeth's loyalty to those she loves are unwavering, and she will only kill or injure if loved ones feel threatened. Her father always taught her that sometimes, you have to put your personal feelings aside and do what has to be done...
As Elizabeth has never been to London, she fears that she will get lost easily within its busy streets and shops. She often equates large buildings with places she has been. There are bad traits as well. Elizabeth hates to be the center of attention and would prefer to have everything done in the background and away from everyone else's eyes. She also has a fiery temper that once she gets started with, she's hard to control.
Elizabeth hates change. She prefers order, routine, and normalcy, and does not handle major life changes well. If she's forced to, she will adapt, but she would rather stay within her own confines. Her biggest fear is not being able to find a place within wizarding society. Because of her age and her mostly Muggle life, working in an office and being the member of team was natural to her. Now that she is a witch and needs a basic education, she fears that until she is trained, she will not be an asset... - Appearance: If you wish to see an avatar version of Elizabeth, please click this link. Because she is both Italian and German, Elizabeth inherited her mother's facial features and fair skin, as well as father's dark brown hair and brown eyes. She keeps her hair easy to deal with parted down the side, with a pair of fashionable black glasses. Because she is near-sighted, Elizabeth cannot see well with out them.
Elizabeth also likes to dress up in casual clothes; she rarely dresses up formally and refuses to wear pantyhose. When she walks, it is with normal steps. Elizabeth talks like an American girl, though without much slang as other young adults from America. While she's not very formal, you'll see her speaking with contractions. She doesn't know many British slang words... - What makes your character different: Elizabeth will be much older than many Hogwarts students. Yet, she is at the beginning of her magical education, and knows that she will be forced to house in a different place than the First Year students. She is closer in age to most of the adults than the students.
Elizabeth knows she has to set a good example. She will probably be taking classes with other students, but cannot live with them. She understands this, and knows that special accommodations must be made if she is to learn at Hogwarts. - What does your character thinks about Dumbledore: Elizabeth has never met Albus Dumbledore in person. All she knows is that the Ministry has labeled him as mad and nothing more.
- Third Years to Fifth Years: The electives Elizabeth is taking are Care of Magical Creatures and Muggle Studies
- Sixth Years and up: The classes Elizabeth will be taking are Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Charms, History of Magic, Care of Magical Creatures, and Muggle Studies
- Special Requests: Elizabeth is old and American, but hopefully there would be a little international flavor to it. If she agrees to be accepted into Hogwarts, she will need to be housed in a room away from the eleven year olds
- Sample: 'Why can't this be more private?' Elizabeth wondered as Professor McGonagall called out the names of those who were to be sorted. It wasn't so much the talking and singing hat that made her nervous, but the fact that she would be sorted in front of students who were all younger than her.
The creeping feeling of everyone's eyes on her aside, what would people think of her when she was finally sorted? She didn't feel like an asset to any house, and in the adult world, those who weren't assets to a company got fired. If this were a secretary job she would be fine, but that hat seemed to be asking more than she could give.
Those thoughts filled her head as the name "Tivoli, Elizabeth" was called out. Making her way through the crowd of first years and onto the three-legged stool, she sat down. Within seconds, the hat was placed on her head...
BTW, I am not an amazing chocolate
