THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original: Book Character
Full Name: Remus John Lupin
Nicknames: Moony, his Marauder name, given to him by his friends James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, in light of his condition.
Age: 37 (March 10, 1960)
Occupation: Currently Unemployed, former Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts.
Alliance: Order of the Phoenix.
Pets (if any): He is sort of his own pet.
Blood Lines: He is a Half-Blood werewolf. His father was a Muggleborn, and his sire is Fenrir Greyback.
Background:
Remus was born to John and Artemis Lupin in the early hours of March 10th, 1960. He was their first and would be their only child. Remus was very bright as a small boy. He was very inquisitive and he learned quickly. His parents had every hope of him growing into an intelligent young man at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His father, John, had been a student there, while his mother had attended Athena’s Academy of Advanced Witchcraft in Piraeus, Greece. It was a very exclusive all girls school. John had met Artemis while traveling Europe following his last year at Hogwarts.
John Lupin, while a Muggleborn, had developed some pretty haughty ideas about himself and his family. His wife was of a pureblood line and his handsome little boy just bolstered his arrogance. He held it as truth that Wizards were by far the most superior magical beings. This fact was to be his downfall when he came across a man named Fenrir Greyback. They met one night at the Leaky Cauldron after John had run some errands in Diagon Alley. Conversation, helped along by a few firewhiskys, was fine until Greyback brought up the issue of werewolf rights. John stated his opinion fiercely, that werewolves were simply not pure enough to hold any kind of rights. In fact, he thought they should be excluded from the community all together. Greyback’s anger reached it peak and he stormed out of the pub shouting words of warning at John as he went. John thought nothing of the encounter and assumed he’d never see the man again, but he was very wrong.
Shortly thereafter, Greyback paid a visit it the Lupin home. The night was black, except for the light of the full moon and of a small bonfire. He saw young Remus playing in the backyard with the family’s pet krup, Artemis sitting close by, keeping an eye on her son. This was his moment, and in a flash, Greyback barreled down upon the small boy. Artemis’ reflexes were quick and she performed a curse painful enough to rid them of the werewolf. Remus was rushed of to St. Mungo’s by his parents and while their skill was enough to save his life, nothing could prevent him from becoming a werewolf as well. This truth devastated John and through he loved his family too much to leave, he never showed them the same care and affection.
A strong pen was built in the Lupin’s basement for their son’s transformations and every effort was made to keep the ordeal hushed up. All hopes of Remus attending Hogwarts and becoming a proper Wizard were practically lost. That is until Albus Dumbledore paid the family a visit. He saw quite a lot of potential in Remus and didn’t think that a three day illness should keep him from an education. Dumbledore saw it that the necessary precautions were taken to ensure Remus’ safety, as well as that of the other student’s. A whole new home was built in Hogsmeade, as well as a passageway to and from Hogwarts. This was where Remus would go during the full moon. In his isolation, he took to attacking himself, crying out in pain. That is why the house was dubbed the Shrieking Shack and considered the most haunted place in Britain.
With Dumbledore on his side, Remus was able to enjoy the perks of everyday life. He was sorted in to Gryffindor and soon became friends with James Potter and Sirius Black, the most popular boys in their class. Another boy, Peter Pettigrew often tagged along and was eventually welcome into their group. It didn’t take long for his friend to notice his monthly absences. His tales of visiting a sick aunt grew thin. They discovered his secret by their second year and took action to relieve his solitude. All three boys decided to become Animagi, as werewolves are really only dangerous to humans. They all kept their word and worked hard, achieving this feat by their fifth year. They were able to keep Remus company, calming him while he transformed. They also created the Marauder’s Map, a comprehensive map of Hogwarts that allowed them to sneak around mostly unnoticed. Remus was given the nickname Moony, in direct relation to his ‘illness’.
That same year, Remus was made a prefect of Gryffindor. He felt quite honored, but never exactly lived up to expectations. Dumbledore thought he might be able to exercise a little control of Sirius and James, who were quite a pair of troublemakers. Peter just went along with whatever James and Sirius were doing. Sirius decided to play a trick on a Slytherin student the boys didn’t care for. Severus Snape had been curious about Remus and his monthly absences too. Sirius told him how to get past the Whomping Willow, knowing he would run into a full grown werewolf at the end of the tunnel. At the last minute, James thought better of it, and ended up saving Snape’s life, but not before he saw what Remus was. He was sworn to secrecy by Dumbledore, but Snape would never forgive any of the boys.
As soon as Remus graduated from Hogwarts, he joined the Order of the Phoenix and the fight against Voldemort. He was left completely on the outside of the plot to hide Lily and James. His assignment was to try and make friendly with other werewolves, getting them to side with the Order. He was devastated by the death of the Potters and Pettigrew, believing that his other best friend, Sirius, had really been a traitor. Remus gladly would have taken charge of Harry, but Dumbledore had other ideas.
For the next twelve years, Remus struggled to find work in the Wizarding world. It was required that he be registered as a werewolf and every employed must be made aware of this fact. It was difficult, impossible even, for Remus to find a decent job and keep it. Even the people who took a chance on him would lose their confidence or be talked out of it. It was the lowest he’d ever been in his life after losing his only friends. He felt as if his life was over. Then, he received a call from Albus Dumbledore, requesting that he fill the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts. At first he was wary. What would parents say if they knew a werewolf was teaching their children? And how would his transformations be handled? Dumbledore assured him that while the staff would be told, the parents need not know. Also, Severus Snape had agreed, reluctantly, to brew the Wolfsbane potion for him every month. The potion allowed him to keep his mind when he transformed.
So, on Sept 1st, he arrived at King’s Cross and boarded the Hogwarts Express. He had hardly expected to run in to Harry Potter so soon, but with his old friend Sirius out on the run, Dementor decided to search the train. After witnessing Harry’s adverse reaction to the creatures, he agreed to teach him how to produce a Patronus charm. It was the only way to repel a Dementor. Remus couldn’t believe how much Harry looked like James, and he’d also inherited his knack for getting into trouble. He was in for another surprise when he discovered that the Marauder’s Map had inadvertently fallen into Harry’s hands. In confiscating it from Harry, Remus found evidence to doubt his opinion of his old friend Sirius. He saw Sirius appear on the map and drag Harry friend Ron towards the Shrieking Shack, but there was another person with them. Remus never would have believed it if he hadn’t seen it on the map with his own eyes.
The truth of Lily and James’ betrayal would finally be revealed when Peter Pettigrew was discovered alive in the form of Ron’s rat, Scabbers. He was finally reconciled with Sirius and both men were prepared to kill Pettigrew for what he had done. Harry stepped in and stopped them, saying that James wouldn’t want his best friends to become murderers. It was decided that Pettigrew would be handed over to the Dementors, clearing Sirius’ name. But all was not to go as planned. It was a full moon that night and Remus had not taken his potion. He transformed into a full werewolf and the chaos that resulted allowed Pettigrew to make his escape. After that night, Snape revealed Remus’ secret to the parents and he resigned his position. He did not want to cause any more trouble for Dumbledore, who had already done so much for him.
Remus spent the next year scrounging around the community, trying to spread what he had earned at Hogwarts as thin as he could. A job was ever harder to come by now that word had spread about his mishap at Hogwarts. It wasn’t long, however, before Remus was recruited by Dumbledore once more. Voldemort had returned to full power, with the help of good old Pettigrew, and the Order of the Phoenix was reformed. He was again enlisted as an ambassador to the werewolf community. The work was hard and grueling, but he was glad to do it, to feel like part of something again. He is not reunited with Sirius and gets to see Harry on a regular basis. Efforts within the Order have been doubled ever since Malfoy was named the new Minister of Magic. While Remus can’t do much by way of recruiting, he can still do all he can to bolster the fight against Voldemort.
Personality:
Remus is a very intelligent person. He is humble and witty, but also shy and reserved. Being a werewolf has taught him a lot about rejection and prejudice. The outgoing nature he expressed as a child were held back, replaced with a withdrawn and contemplative nature which he presents to the outside world. It is difficult for him to make real friends, but when he does he is fiercely loyal. He spends so much time being disliked and rejected that when he is accepted by someone, he tends to be very lenient with their behavior. That is why he could never really enact discipline on his friends at Hogwarts. As a youth, he always enjoyed watching Quidditch, put could never be persuaded to play. He may be smart, but that does not mean you have good hand-eye coordination while riding a broomstick. He much preferred to have his feet on the ground. He is very fond of reading, and loves to have time to curl up with a good book. His sleeping patterns vary, interrupted by the full moon. This is why he appears especially tired on days after he has transformed.
He has had a hard time accepting his condition as a werewolf. His father could never see past it when he was a child, so he also viewed it as a disease. He lacks real self-confidence, but is very good at faking it. He is not very good at making choices, but he knows where his loyalties lie. While he is a very skilled wizard, he does not believe in his own talents. This does not prevent him from giving his all in a fight, for he knows it is the only way to survive and protect his friends. He made a great teacher because he was able to draw the best out of his students. He was able to see potential in all his students and he helped them conquer their fears and self doubt, while he is unable to conquer his own. Very few of the professors at Hogwarts treated him poorly due to his condition, so he was able to be very open and friendly with them. They, like Dumbledore, saw him as a person first. Others, like Severus Snape (with whom he shares mutual dislike), thought him inferior. Needless to say, he did not foster relationships with them, though this did not prevent him from feeling the sting of prejudice.
Appearance:
Remus is a tall man, standing at about 6’3’’. He has a slight build, often looking underfed. He has light brown hair, which is graying. He looks much older than his age, although the spark of youth can occasionally be seen in his grey-blue eyes. His premature aging is a result of the stress put on his body by transforming every month. He also bears a few scars from the days in which he used to attack himself, one right across his left cheek. He regularly looks worn and tired, with heavy circles under his eyes. He walks tall, but fatigue is evident in every inch of his body.
His clothing is simple and shabby. It has become increasingly tattered and worn in the years that he has known Harry. Being a werewolf has forced him to live in poverty and he can’t afford to buy new, or even nice, clothing. His gaze is friendly and knowing. When he transforms fully, he looks like a large brown wolf with an elongated snout and limbs. He loses all sense of self and would attack any person he sees.
Sample:
It was late. Remus Lupin sat awake is his office, investigating a large, murky tank that had arrived earlier that day. It contained a grindylow to be used in the next days lesson. He watched as a creature with long spindly fingers glided by the edge of the glass. Remus smiled and returned to his desk. It was hard for him to sleep right after a full moon. Although his transformations were easy to handle with the help of Snape’s Wolfsbane Potion, he was still unable to get decent amounts of sleep as a wolf. He sat down in the tall chair and opened the book he’d set for his class. He flipped almost absentmindedly through the pages, distracted by thoughts of the past.
How could he ever have know that Sirius Black, his close friend, would betray everyone he held dear? He had tried his best over the past twelve years not to think about his old friend, but with Sirius escape, it was hard to think of anything else. He sighed as he recalled the old days at Hogwarts. He and his friends walked around like they owned the place. Remus regretted that he hadn’t truly done his duty as a prefect, but then some of his memories wouldn’t be quite as fun.
And what of Harry Potter? The boy was bright, but attracted trouble just like his father. He’d seen Harry earlier that day, introducing him to the elusive grindylow. Remus still found it hard to look at Harry and not see James. It was like looking into the past and seeing his friend, except for his eyes. Harry had eyes that Remus would never forget. The eyes of his mother, Lily, who often provided comfort to Remus during their school days. He was happy to be helping Harry overcome his weakness against Dementors, and was very pleased at how fast he was progressing.
He closed the book, realizing that he wasn’t accomplishing anything with it. He stretched his arms and pushed the chair out from the desk. It really was late, the least he could do was try to get some sleep. He would need it to get through class with the First Years.
