THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original: Origional
Full Name: Benjamina Rosanna Winckler
Nicknames: Ben. It’s a family joke that all of their daughters have very feminine name with masculine nicknames- i.e. Alexandria becomes Alex and Samantha becomes Sam.
Age: 15; turns 16 December 22 (The age of your character and their birthday. Note Hermione Granger is born in 1979 and Harry in 1980)
Year: 5th year
Pets: Grey tabby named Mem. (Short for Menemosyne the goddess of memories)
House: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin.
Blood Lines: Ben’s father, Hans Winckler is nobility from Germany with only scant traces of wizardry in his family’s blood. Her mother, Anne Law-Winckler is an English lady with more magickal blood in her lines, but is not actually a witch herself. The generation that Ben was born into has no other witches/wizards, in fact the last witch in her family was her grandmother who died a few years back.
Background: Ben’s family ran out of money two generations back. Her father is trying very desperately to marry off his five daughters (Ben, Alex, Sam, George and Will) to anyone with a title and some gold to his name. So far, he’s not succeeding. Since Ben is the oldest, she is the one who is most key to his little plot. During third year, he sent off her photograph and a letter he signed with her name to any prospects. Needless to say, she was highly displeased. She blamed him for treating her like property and blamed her mother for being weak and not sticking up for her. Her father threw her out. Ben packed a trunk and left for England where one of her outcast Aunts was living. During that same third year, she broke it off with her then-boyfriend Rodger-the-Ravenclaw. He was rather possessive as well and couldn’t realize that he was emotionally abusing her by calling her ugly all the time. She suffered a short mental breakdown- which was quickly fixed at St. Mungo’s- and returned to Hogwarts almost as good as new.
Ben’s true passion is Dance. Ballroom, tap-dancing, modern, ballet, it doesn’t matter. It was such even before she knew that she was a witch. Now she is hard pressed to find a way to meld magic and art together to do something with her life. She is unsuccessful at Transfiguration but has a particular gift for Potions. She is uncanny with animals and experience some moderate success at Charms. She isn’t totally lost among the stars, but the future seems to be just out of her reach. She can defend herself against any creature that means to harm her, but she makes an easy target for curses, hexes and jinxes. Ben’s wand is 10 inches, cherry with dragon heartstring.
Personality: Ben has a slight problem with self esteem and also a bit of a problem with appetite suppressants and tranquilizers. When she reached the end of her growing period, she found that her bones were beginning to hurt a lot more and she also had a tendency to gain weight. So she got hooked and by the second semester of sixth year, she can’t live without them. Other than that, she is generally a warm person, if a little sparing on the details with her home life. She is always ready to lend an ear, or a shoulder, as the case may be. Since her explosive breakup, she is also ready to defend any girl from the trespasses of any suitor.
When she is not in class, you can find her studying or practicing her dancing. She wakes up extra-early in the morning to get in some stretching and warm-ups before breakfast. She is very conscious about what she eats because her body is her instrument and must come before all else. Late at night she stretches and cools down before hopping in bed and reading a couple chapters of something light and romantic.
Due to her home life and other circumstances, she is surprisingly mature for only 15 years old (still going on 16). She treats every situation with a little caution and carefully asses every person before deciding whether or not she likes them. This has caused some people to call her aloof or ‘holier-than-thou’ but she is only such to protect herself.
When Dumbledore announced that You-Know-Who was back, she was prepared to swear her allegiance to Harry and fight for the right side. Her family, on the other hand, was not so ready. They thought that they had more at stake and were unwilling to risk it all.
Appearance: Ben is either on the tall side of average, or the short side of tall. Standing at 5’9” and weighing only 110 pounds, she presents a very elegant figure. She has the graceful walk of someone who always knows how they appear to other people. Her movements are very deliberate and fluid but occasionally she trips over something and does herself some damage. She bruises very easily and then makes it worse by fretting and touching her wound.
Her hair is dark brown and shoulder-blade length. It falls in tight waves and is often uncooperative. Her eyes are two different colors- blue and grey. It's one more thing that takes a chunk out of her self esteem because she doesn't realize how pretty they are.
When it’s warm and she’s not wearing her uniform, she likes to wear tight, stretchy tops in conservative colors and loose pants- like gauchos. In the winter she’s more find of thick, Irish sweaters and very loose jeans in dark blues. She is very fond of silver and usually wears a thin, silver chain with a small rose pendant. She has two ear piercings, two in the lobes and two just above that.
Ben’s voice is very soft as she is more of a listener than a talker. If she sang, she would be an alto. Since her household is bi-lingual, she speaks both English and German fluently. She also has an almost flawless accent in either.
What makes your character different: My character is different because of her maturity, her ambition for dancing and her almost unstable personal life.
What does your character think about Dumbledore: Ben is deeply admiring of Dumbledore for his intellect and his courage against the ministry. She has great respect for his power.
Third Years to Fifth Years: Ancient runes and Care of Magical Creatures.
Sixth Years and up: n/a
Special Requests: I’m not really so much asking as offering. I can cut out the drug problems, if you think it would be better. When I RP with my friends (offline) I always used it as a way for Voldemort to gain a hold inside Hogwarts. The Tranquilizers create large gaps in Ben’s memory so Voldemort possesses her to further whatever plot he has. Then again, I am not an amazing chocolater, so what does it matter?
Sample: Benjamina sat at her dressing table, staring down at the thick parchment envelope. Her name, country, province, city and room glistened greet in the candlelight. Ben bit her lip. She had hoped something like this wasn’t going to happen. She was already too different from her family, anyway. Her sisters, jealous of her dominance as the eldest sibling, would seize upon this opportunity to make her life a living hell. Not to mention her father... What would he say? He and her mother had already planned out all of the social events they would show her at for the net two years.
There was nothing she could do about it now. Besides, hadn’t she prayed for deliverance only yesterday? This letter might be her ticket out of the livestock parade. She picked up her brass letter opener and expertly slit open her mail.
Ten minutes later, she still sat with the letter open in her hands. Ben breathed a sigh of relief. Hogwarts really did want her. For a moment, she had worried that they would direct her to some other institute- Durmstrang, perhaps, her father’s Alma Mater. She read and re-read the list of supplies. Luckily, they weren’t asking for much. Any more books and she would be forced to venture into a second-hand shop. Her parents would make sure that her robes were pristine, even if it meant cutting back in other, vital areas.
Speaking of parents, how was she going to deliver this news? She briefly considered slipping her father the letter under his dinner plate, but dismissed it as immature and it would show her in an unfavorable light. She also considered giving it to her mother and letting her do the arguing for her but for one, he mother didn’t argue and for two, she getting someone else to do her dirty work. After a long debate, Ben realized that the only way to deal with this in a form that would allow her to look at herself in the mirror tomorrow would be to corner her father in his study and battle it out with him- alone. Not a pleasing prospect, but far nobler than anything else she could come up with.
Let’s get this over with she thought to herself as she picked up the letter and departed her room, closing the door with a snap.
