The summer was finally coming to a close and time couldn’t go fast enough for Serena Westfall. Diagon Alley was swarmed with people, many carting around children who were getting ready for their first trip to Hogwarts. All those happy, excited faces. It made Serena sick. The only good thing about being stuck in Diagon Alley for the day was that she had a little more time away from her not-so-devoted parents.
She had spent her summer shut away in her room, trying to avoid any contact with her family. Her parents didn’t care much for her. They had more important things to do that summer. Death Eaters were making plans, trouble was brewing and her mother couldn’t get enough of it. She’d been involved in the Death Eater movement since the beginning, even if she was never considered a major player. Her father’s interest was more focused on his income, but he’d do anything his wife told him. He couldn’t risk getting on the bad side his most important trophy. Serena was like a bad side effect to their ‘loving’ marriage and they only paid attention to her they had company. The Westfall family had to keep up its appearances after all.
Serena had already taken care of purchasing her new school books and seen to it that they would promptly be sent to her home. She struggled through the crowd gathered around the windows of Quality Quidditch Supplies, pulling a long strip of parchment from the pocket of her coat. Once she had found a clearer spot she stopped to examine the rest of the items on her shopping list. New robes…she thought, stuffing the parchment into her purse this time. Serena glance around, trying to gain her bearings, despite the mess of buffoons that surrounded her. She could see Madame Malkin’s fairly close on her right and let a small laugh escape her lips. She had never even set foot in that low scale store. Pushing forward to her right, she headed for Twillfit and Tatting’s.
As she navigated the narrow sidewalks of Diagon Alley, she couldn’t help but feeling a bit lonely. She certainly looked down upon any and all of the happy families running around together, but perhaps it was because she was jealous. Serena had been doing her own school shopping since she was in her second year. It would have been her first if her parents hadn’t wanted to make an appearance at Platform 9 ¾. By way of her childhood and her parents influence, Serena had always been a loner. She would obviously welcome any attentions she received from someone else of her social status. She wasn’t much to make an effort to socialize, even with someone she thought would make an acceptable friend. The only thing she had really been taught by her family was that pureblood was the only real sort of Wizard or Witch and anyone else wasn’t for the air in their lungs. While she had never really taken interest in the Death Eaters like her mother had, she certainly supported their beliefs. There were only a few people at school that she would give her time to and she had yet to see any of them, not that she would ever personally seek them out. No upstanding lady would ever commit such a desperate call for friendship.
Twillfit and Tatting’s was now just a few feet in front of her. At least she could have a few minutes of peace once she passed through the doors. It was one of the more upscale stores in Diagon Alley and most of the families visiting either couldn’t afford their pricy robes or didn’t think that so much money should been spent on such plain clothing that their children were just going to grow out of. She took a final glance at the people in the street before entering the shop; all those new first years running aroung Hogwarts. What a joy...she thought, passing through the door to purchase some of the finest robes in town.
