Full Name: Peter Pettigrew (his parents neglected to give him a middle name)
Nicknames: Wormtail – from his Marauder days because he can turn into a rat.
Age: 36
Occupation: Loyal and pitiful servant to Lord Voldemort.
Alliance: He is a Death Eater, though a rather weak one. He likes to align himself with the side he thinks is more powerful and can do more for him. Now that he’s picked Voldemort he can’t turn back without being killed.
Blood Line: Very nearly Pureblood. There were a few squibs on his mother’s side of the family.
Background: Peter was born in 1960 to the middle class wizarding family of Prior and Prudence Pettigrew. He had a very dull childhood. He always found it hard to make friends, as he was not exactly blessed with gifts that set him apart from the rest of the children that surrounded him. He discovered the only way he could fit in to a group was to try to copy the most popular kids in the best way he could. His parents were actually surprised to find that he had received a letter accepting him to Hogwarts. He’d shown no significant magical skill in his early childhood years. So Peter packed his things and headed off to the magical school, only to find life not much different than that at home. He struggled in most of his classes, his only slight strength being Herbology. And that wasn’t exactly impressive to his peers.
Soon after arriving at school, he found the three boys that would become his best friends for the next twenty years. James Potter and Sirius Black were two of his fellow housemates in Gryffindor and they were immensely popular from the moment they entered Hogwarts. They also hung around with a boy named Remus Lupin, who was very smart although not quite as popular. Peter chose this group to try and assimilate into. He began tagging along where ever the three boys went, interjecting eager remarks to their confident comments. The three boys were sympathetic with Peter, and they found his ego boosts rather enjoyable. He was soon accepted into their group and finally felt he had a place at Hogwarts. Peter was, however, the straggler of the clique. The boys were curious as to why their friend Remus disappeared once a month and with some investigation found out that he was a werewolf. The other three decided they would become Animagi, to keep Remus company when he transformed. It took him much longer than it took James and Sirius to achieve the correct Animagus transformation. The four boys dubbed themselves The Marauders. James was called Prongs, Lupin was called Moony, Sirius Padfoot and Peter Wormtail. They created the ingenious Marauder’s Map, and got themselves quite the reputation for being troublemakers. Peter would tag along with anything James and Sirius did, even if Lupin spoke lazily against it.
The four went on to be close friends after they’d finished their schooling at Hogwarts. Peter was present for the wedding of James to Lily Evans, and soon after his ideals began to change. The Dark Lord Voldemort had been gaining power, and Peter had started to show an interest in the group called the Death Eaters. James, Lily, Sirius and Remus had all made the choice to fight against Voldemort. Lily and James had even joined the Order of the Phoenix. Peter was drawn to the growing power of the Death Eaters, but he wasn’t sure how he could even join their ranks without being killed on the spot. He sought a place in the new order that was being created by Voldemort, and then his chance to prove himself worthy was placed gently into his hands.
Somehow, Voldemort had been tipped off that the Potters would be a threat to his regime, and he set out to locate them. In an effort to protect themselves and their one-year-old son, Harry, Lily and James decided to perform the Fidelius Charm and go into hiding. Sirius had been chosen as their secret keeper, but at the last minute he persuaded his dear friends to give Peter the job. Peter would never be suspected to protect their location. And while that was true, no one ever suspected that Peter would turn his back on the people that had stood by his side for most of his life and betray them the first chance he got; which is exactly what Peter did. He sought the first audience he could with the Death Eaters and then Voldemort and divulged the location of the Potter’s hiding place. Voldemort himself proceeded to Godric’s Hollow and murdered the Potters before his Killing Curse backfired on Harry and he was reduced to nearly nothing. Peter, hearing of the affect the attack had taken on his new Master, fled. But Sirius managed to catch up with him. Knowing that he would spend the rest of his life in Azcaban for his crime, he chose the easy way out. He placed the blame on Sirius, blowing up a muggle street and killing a few people in the process. Sirius was then taken to Azcaban in Peter’s place, believed to be guilty of all his crimes and responsible for Peter’s death. Peter had however transformed into a rat, and he would stay that way for the next 12 years.
Peter the rat fell into the hands of the Weasley family, where he was dubbed Scabbers and was given to their son Percy. He was then passed onto the youngest Weasley boy, Ron when he entered Hogwarts. Ron then befriended the son of his former best friend, Harry Potter. Peter was able to live peacefully for the first two years Ron attended Hogwarts, but during the summer before Ron’s third year Peter discovered the news that Sirius had escaped Azcaban. Knowing that Sirius would be after him, he was terribly frightened. Hermione Granger’s cat Crookshanks, who could easily tell he was only masquerading as an animal, was also constantly chasing him around. Peter/Scabbers had decided it was best to fake his own death for the second time, but could not escape being discovered by Sirius and Lupin, who had come to teach at Hogwarts. Harry and his friends also found out Scabbers true identity. But Remus had failed to take his Wolfbane potion that same night, and Peter was allowed an easy get away. Seeing as he was now a cast away in the world, Peter made the choice to find his old master, Voldemort.
He succeeded in locating Voldemort’s barely living form, and transported him to the Riddle Mansion where he proceeded to care for him until he was able to perform the spell to give his master back his body. Peter accomplished his task, and Voldemort rose again. He is now a most humble servant, doing whatever he is told. Although he is quite afraid of his master, he’d be ever more afraid to break ranks when he’d already gone that far. He still, however, owes his life to Harry Potter, who stopped his former friends from killing him nearly 3 years ago.
Personality: Peter is quite diverse in his personality traits. He is very much a coward and is constantly seeking a wing to hide under. Even if the wing is that of the most evil wizard ever to live. He is willing to sacrifice any ideals he’s ever held to give himself a leg up in the world. He works for himself, and being in the service of Voldemort, that means doing whatever bidding he is assigned. He did not flee to Voldemort when he first heard of his unfortunate accident because he’d believed the Dark Lord to be vanquished. He would never align himself with something or someone he thought was weak. He has been trying to escape his weaknesses his entire life. Peter is very flaky, and is not a loyal person. He claims to be Voldemort’s most loyal servant because he is the one that succeeded in bringing him back to power, but he was also trusted to be a loyal friend to Lily and James. He has always been afraid of people seeing him as weak and incapable, so naturally his best choice was to associate with the most feared wizard of all time. That way no one would dare ‘pick on him’. He is also a very ungrateful person. He never fully appreciated the fact the he had true friends that cared about him as a person and didn’t care how much power he had. His goal in life was not to be surrounded by caring family and friends, but to be surrounded by power. No matter what he had to sacrifice to get there. It can’t be said that Peter didn’t regret the decision to sentence his best friends to death, but he made a choice and not he has his own demons to live with. The death of Lily and James will always hang over his head like a curse.
Appearance: Peter is very short in stature, standing at a meager 5’4’’. He has gotten increasingly round over the years, although he is not exactly fat. He is more portly then obese. He has also become increasingly bald, losing his hair at an alarming rate for his age party because of all the stress brought along with Sirius’s break out. What little is left of his hair is a mousy brown color, his eyes a dull hazel. His wardrobe usually consists of one tannish gray suit that became very tatty as it aged, and his Death Eater robes. Peter was never one to uphold any kind of fashion. He has fingernails reminiscent of claws, and his beady eyes and bucked teeth add to his fitting rat-like appearance.
Pets (if any): He doesn’t really need one. Although he is rather unfriendly to cats.
Sample: The room was nearly pitch black except for the dimmed fire that burned in the hearth opposite a rather large armchair. Peter made his way carefully across the room to the backside of the chair. He kept his eyes open for Nagini, who could be curled up anywhere in the blackness of the floor. His hands were trembling quite a lot as he struggled to speak. It was never something he was going to get used to. Peter would never be able to hold a casual conversation with Lord Voldemort. After all, he was a servant not a friend.
“You called, m-my Lord.” Peter said hesitantly. While the Dark Lord had been a terrifying entity when in full power, he was even more intimidating as the clear/white spirity being he had been reduced to. Peter could not bear to lay his eyes on his master just yet, so he kept his gaze limited to the fire and the floor.
“Have you milked Nagini today?” his master inquired in the most horribly voice Peter had ever heard.
“N-not yet, My Lord…” Peter responded apologetically with a very low bow. “I’ve been s-seeing to some other things, but I-I am here to s-serve, My Lord.” Pettigrew was trying his hardest to make up for the fact that he had not performed one of his most important jobs. It was vital for the Dark Lord’s survival, and he’d been off wasting time with the Tri Wizard Tournament. While that was also critical to his Master’s health, the most pressing matter was milking the snake; a task the Peter dreaded. The snake obeyed only Voldemort after all. Who knew when she would feel like an extra snack.
“M-My Lord knows that I-I am his most loyal and h-humble servant, and I will perform any t-task I am given the honor of.” He spoke as he searched the room for the large snake. If there was one thing that Wormtail had become skilled at, it was sweet talk. It was what saved him from an early demise when he confronted the Death Eaters about the Potter’s location. Peter shuddered at the thought of his dead friends. He rather disliked the subject; for it only drilled it deeper into him…he had murdered his best friends.
