THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original:
Definitely original
Full Name:
Crest Daniel Lunar
Nicknames:
None…
Age:
19, so that would be…1976. May 4th, 1977.
Occupation:
Freelance Reporter/Daily Prophet. Also a member of the Order of the Phoenix.
Alliance:
Order of the Phoenix – Crest has had problems with Death Eaters in the past…both occasions (with the same Death Eater) not ending well at all. (This is explained further in his background.) So, he has joined the Order of the Phoenix to oppose You-Know-Who (also known as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named or “The Dark Lord”, whatever your preference) and his Death Eaters.
Pets (if any):
Only his late brother’s cat, Shade and an owl (Talan) for every day mail and other necessities.
Blood Lines:
Crest is the second-born child of his parents. The Lunars are a pureblooded family, with the exception of Crest’s mother, LeAnne, who was born to muggles, although LeAnne’s great grandfather was a wizard as well. Crest’s father’s (Daniel) side can be traced back many centuries to wizards and witches, with only two or three muggles and squibs in the entire family tree. (I’m pretty much just copying this from the original application of Crest Lunar.)
Background: (Copied from most recent accepted application from the ezboard.)
Crest was born to Daniel and LeAnne Lunar. His father came from a long line of wizards, while his mother was muggleborn. Crest was the second Lunar Child, the younger brother of Krystal Lunar, who was about three-years-old when Crest was born. They lived in a popular wizarding neighborhood not far from the London Ministry of Magic. Crest was raised here and lived here for quite a bit of his life. When Crest was three, his parents had another boy that they named William, after the originator of the Lunar line of wizards. Crest quickly took to William and they got along quite well, as well as with Krystal, who was six at the time. Four years later (Crest was seven), Fern, another boy, was born into the Lunar family. There was nothing extraordinary in Crest’s childhood (his adolescence, now, was a different story). He grew up in London, and had a whole wizarding community around him for his entire childhood, thus he was quite used to magic.
As expected, when Crest was eleven, he received his letter from Hogwarts and was off to Diagon Alley to buy his school supplies. Crest was very excited about attending Hogwarts after all of the stories that he had heard from his older sister. His first two years did not have much to them besides his studies. Crest proved to be a very intelligent boy and had been sorted into the Hufflepuff House. Starting his third year, many things began to happen. Voldemort’s possession of Professor Quirrel occurred during this year. This was odd to many, although no one really knew what had happened except for those involved (meaning Crest really has no knowledge of this event), but everyone knew that the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor had died during an incident that involved Harry Potter.
But, the summer of Crest’s third year was a bad one for him, probably the most eventful of his life, and would eventually come back to haunt him. Crest befriended their new neighbor, Nicholas Valran, despite his parents’ warnings that they did not trust the man (because he had been a Death Eater during Voldemort’s reign). This was Crest’s first mistake. The Lunars were a fairly prominent pureblooded family in the wizarding community, although not in the same way as the Malfoys, the Blacks or the Parkinsons. They gained their prominence through good deeds and work and held a benevolent stature and influence over things. Valran knew this and began influence Crest in subtle ways. Eventually, Crest trusted Valran extremely, mostly due to being a naïve thirteen-year-old boy, and the “former” Death Eater took advantage of this. He asked Crest to help him in releasing old [Death Eater] friends from lesser wizarding prisons (not the likes of Azkaban), which Crest managed to do through the Lunar name, and therefore these Death Eaters were released and allowed to rampage. Valran led them on a “quest” to attempt releasing others and hopefully build a new, greater following of Voldemort’s. Before they got too far, Crest realized how wrong he had been and lost all faith in Valran. He found a way to contact the Minister of Magic and Valran was locked up along with the other Death Eaters, this time at Azkaban. Valran swore to get revenge on Crest. Crest’s parents were deeply ashamed of Crest and left him to go to Hogwarts alone…abandoning him. But, they knew something about Valran that Crest did not, and Crest thought they were punishing him. His parents put memory charms on Crest’s younger brothers, William and Fern, voiding any memories of Crest that they had. The effects of this abandonment did not come full-force until after Crest’s fourth years, which saw the reopening of the Chamber of Secrets, and also William’s first year at Hogwarts, but Crest ignored him because of his issues with their parents.
The summer after his fourth year was horrid. His parents made true on their abandonment and left Crest to fend for himself, although watching him from afar. Crest thought that they had simply left him and quickly developed a hatred for them. At the same time, Crest’s parents asked a few of their friends to watch over and care for Crest, since they could not because of Valran’s secret. By now, Krystal (Crest’s older sister) was out on her own and took Crest in for the summer as well. Crest’s fifth and sixth years also granted nothing of much substance like his first two years had, except Sirius Black’s escape, which brought the fear that Valran could also escape from Azkaban as well. Also, the Triwizard Tournament and the claimed return of the Dark Lord by Harry Potter. The wizarding world was up in arms…or so it should have been.
Then, Crest’s seventh year (and presumably his final year…) was hectic. Krystal came to Hogwarts (at the age of 20) to be the Care of Magical Creatures professor. Crest’s favorite subject immediately became COMC, not surprisingly. Krystal tried to convince Crest to find a way to break William’s memory chamr, and Crest told her that he had know how to do it all along; just allow William to see him, but he had not before because Crest had been too annoyed with his parents. Now, though, he knew this was exactly what his parents did not want to happen and quickly found a perfect time to reunite with his brother. Their reunion found William to be just as flustered with his parents as Crest was, but also bitter at Crest for ignoring him for so long. William’s anger was settled quite quickly as the two had more time together and were able to catch up. Near the end of the year, the Ministry took control of Hogwarts and Abigail Williams took over as headmistress. The summer following, William was only home for a few weeks before going to Krystal’s home with Crest to visit with them…for the rest of the summer…or so they thought. Crest received a letter informing him that he had to repeat his seventh year due to poor marks in some of his classes. This angered Crest, obviously. Eventually, the Ministry’s summer camp came into effect and both Crest and William had to go. Krystal even went as a “chaperone”, to keep an eye out for them. Then the kidnappings happened, which did not affect Crest nor William much other than to frighten them. Naturally, the Ministry covered it up and blamed the incident upon the missing ex-headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore, who had actually gone underground with the Order of the Phoenix to fight against You-Know-Who and his minions.
Crest’s repeated seventh year was found to be a mistake. Krystal helped Crest work speak with Professor Sprout, head of Hufflepuff house, who then worked it out with the new headmistress…though it was not a major thing. Crest was then out to look for work after the camp, which he was forced to attend even though he had not failed his seventh year of school. The only bad news: Valran had escaped from Azkaban with others, Apparently, Valran then followed the Lunars and attempted to get his revenge on Crest. Only he failed…instead of killing Crest with the Unforgivable Curse of Avada Kedavra, the spell caught William in the crossfire between them, and the second youngest Lunar died. Valran immediately fled, knowing Crest’s potential when he was angry. The family had a funeral, which Crest attended, but made sure to avoid Fern, now understanding the reason behind the memory charms. Valran was a bloodthirsty murderer, and did not care who he killed. Crest did not wish to get another brother killed because of his “feud” with Valran. Still, Crest did not wish to make things up with his parents, his hatred of them for abandoning him still raging.
Crest blamed the death on himself, but was able to get over it with Krystal’s help. She also helped him set up and get a job with The Daily Prophet, which was something that Crest was oddly interested in: journalism, that is. Originally, he had wanted to be an auror, but he changed his mind after the mix up with Hogwarts and him almost having to repeat his seventh year. Crest wanted to let the public know what was really going on, not what the Ministry force-fed through the Prophet, but he had to tread carefully as to not lose his job. Crest has contacted the Order of the Phoenix and has decided to join them to take on an even more active role against You-Know-Who and his Death Eaters, most specifically Valran, who Crest knew had fled to his Master’s protection immediately. Crest now has a regular column in The Daily Prophet and does his work for the Order of the Phoenix. He has also taken up a story idea about Hogwarts…
Personality:
Crest is a very…unique person. Many things have affected who he is today. By nature, he is fairly sarcastic and jokes a bit. Crest is also fairly suspicious of things, which is a trait caused by the original Valran incident. Once he knows someone is being real and not faking anything about themselves, he will be fine with them and trust that individual. Once his trust is gained, Crest is very protective and he’ll guard over anyone that he considers close with a passion. Crest does not want to lose anyone…at least not anyone else. Because of his loss, he is also pretty wary of getting close to anyone because he does not want them to get hurt and therefore might seem a little cold at a first meeting.
Appearance:
Crest would usually wear comfortable, “lazy-wear”, but he more so now goes about in more formal clothes due to being employed by The Prophet, the whole image of the paper thing being involved. He often wears button-up shirts, khakis and not so rarely a full suit. Crest also gets annoyed with this at times and goes about with average Muggle clothes every once in a while. One will hardly ever find him in wizard robes anymore, unless it is for some sort of special occasion.
Crest has pretty fair skin that is getting closer to being called a tan, but definitely not quite there yet. His eyes are a piercing, icy blue that affect everyone in different ways. Crest used to be able to smile easily and more readily, but since William’s death, he has been much more guarded and introverted with his emotions than before. Crest is indeed working at getting to his normal self again. It’s all still part of the recovery process.

Ugh…Crest Lunar thought as soon as he walked into what could be considered a bit of an “office”. The Daily Prophet’s “headquarters”-of-sorts. Crest didn’t even know how to explain it…whatever. This was where he came to submit his story, ask for a deadline extension for his column (which really wasn’t that often), or just to work without having to worry about losing his stuff at “home”, or the temporary apartment that was actually his sister’s. Crest was planning to find a place of his own…as soon as he had the time to do it. Thankfully, Krystal, his older sister, was great enough to let him stay for as long as he needed, even if Crest felt bad for intruding longer than he thought he should be. As soon as I can…I’ll find somewhere to move and be out of Krystal’s hair, Crest thought. Hopefully, that day would be sooner rather than later; not just for his own sake, but for Krystal’s as well. Not only was it convenient, but Crest doubted that she enjoyed him being there if she had…company of a certain romantic kind. Also, there was the whole Valran thing. Crest had no idea where Valran was, what he was planning…who knew? But the longer that he was with his sister, the longer that there was the possibility that she would end up like William.
William…
The brother, younger brother, that had died not long ago. Far too not long ago. A week or two, even. William had been killed by Valran because of Crest. Because Crest had been SO effing stupid so long ago. Why had he not been able to see through that Death Eater’s lies? Even though he had been thirteen, how could he have been so stupid? Crest knew that William’s death was his fault even though Krystal constantly tried to convince him otherwise. He had allowed her to think that he no longer blamed himself, but he did. He honestly did. Had William not been there…had been somewhere, anywhere, else, Valran would not have been able to even hurt him. Valran had been after Crest; he was going to kill Crest…and now Will was dead, not Crest. William was the one buried in the ground now, when it definitely should have been him. Oh, what Crest would give now to have died himself rather than William. Only sixteen!
Crest strained to blink away the tears that were forming in his eyes and began to return his attention to where he had just walked into. It wa a mess, but it was also deadline. Crest was planning to just walk in, turn in his column and walk out. By the looks of this place, that would not be easy to accomplish, if even possible. Other reporters (and otherwise) were running around, yelling at each other, holding random scraps of paper in their hands. Things were all over the place, as this was a particularly bad deadline. Crest had quickly finished his column on current goings-on within the Ministry of Magic. He had written about Lucius Malfoy’s plans for the Ministry, now that he was fully in the position of Minister of Magic. Those intentions were crap, but Crest had shown that in his minor column.
“Lunar!” a female voice called out to Crest’s right. Well, it was not too late to get through this place quickly enough. The voice belonged to none other than Piper Olandolf, a specifically nasty reporter. Remind you of anyone? Her lies, although influenced by the editors (who were in turn influenced by the Ministry of Magic) weaved webs of confusion so tight and secure that it was a wonder the entire world did not think that Dumbledore had destroyed Hogwarts and killed its students overnight all by himself and that his next plan was to get at the Ministry. Crest was here specifically to disprove people like Piper. Piper, though, sounded particularly nasty this morning.
“You don’t have any crap in your column about my story, do you?” Piper asked venomously. “If you try to discredit me again, Lunar, I swear you’ll be gone sooner than you can say ‘You-Know-Who’.”
“One, if I did…I wouldn’t tell you. You’ll have to read it along with the rest of the subscribers of The Prophet, Ms. Olandolf. Two, it doesn’t unless you’re writing about Minister Malfoy’s policies. Three, if you would stop printing lies, then no one would be able to ‘discredit’ you,” Crest spat back, just as venomously. “Four, threaten me again and you won’t even be able to say ‘You-Know-Who’, or anything else for that matter, again.”
Effectively irked, Crest stormed past her and into the editor’s office. He slammed the piece of paper that had his column on it onto the desk, saying what it was, then turned around and left the room just as quickly as he had entered. As he was walking away, Crest turned his head and gave Piper an icy look and left the office in all of the same storm that she had caused. The bad thing was that Piper would probably enjoy how much she had annoyed him. The good thing was that she had seemed too astonished by his reply to enjoy much of anything. Once he was out of the building, Crest disapparated back “home”.
Oh, but what if I am an amazing chocalater? Ahh...whatever. I am not an amazing chocalater. ;D
