THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original: original
Full Name: Oriole Michael Balez
Nicknames: his mom calls him Orli as a pet name, but most other people call him Oriole
Age: 17; July 23, 1979
Year: 7th
Pets: 2 hand sized geckoes. One is dark green with a spattering of yellow spots across its back and is named Pip, and the other is deep red coloured and is named Mer.
House: Ravenclaw
Blood Lines: Both of his parents are of magical blood, though both of his grandparents on his mother's side were Muggles.
Background: Oriole Michael Balez was born on July 23, 1979 in the early hours of the morning to George and Olivia Balez. The family lived in a small, two-story house on the outskirts of London, England. He was the youngest of the couple's four children, all of whom were male.
Oriole's oldest brother Daniel was eighteen when he was born, finished with school and working for the Cleansweep broom manufacturers. His brothers Julian and Robert, 15 and 13, respectfully, were attending school at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After finishing their years there, Julian began work as an Auror in the Ministry of Magic, and Robert took a job in researching Magical Creatures of the Americas and moved to central United States.
Oriole's parents both worked in the entertainment business. George worked for the label that sported acts such as the Weird Sisters, while Olivia worked with Muggles, having grown up in a Muggle environment. Both did their business in London, where there was much entertainment to be found.
Being the youngest, with siblings off at school and parents off at work, Oriole was often left to himself. His parents hired a nanny to watch over him and to teach him basic skills such as reading and writing. He very rarely left the area surrounding his house, and therefore had no friends to play with.
When Oriole was five years old, Olivia was offered a very good job with a company based in Los Angeles, California in the United States. Since they had no children currently enrolled at school, the Balezes decided to keep their house in London while renting a smaller one just outside of Los Angeles.
In the United States, Oriole's mother wished that he learn as much about Muggles as possible (as her parents were Muggles). She enrolled him in a Muggle grade school not far from her new office. School was torture for Oriole; he already knew how to read and write and do simple math (as a result from his nanny), and was more advanced than the other 5 year olds in Muggle kindergarten who were just learning the alphabet.
Because of this, Oriole was moved into a second grade level class. The other children in the class made fun of him and picked on him because he was younger than they and still did just as well as them at the work. None of the children would be friends with him, and during play times, Oriole would either read or study by himself.
Oriole continued in the school system, however much he disliked it, until he was nine years old. Throughout those four years, he had been treated in almost the same way by his classmates, until they simply ignored him and he returned the favour. The only thing he had to look forward to were visits from Robert, who was living in Colorado researching beasts that live at high altitudes. Several times a year, Robert would go out to Los Angeles to visit with his family, and he would always bring goodies and treats for his little brother. Oriole's other brothers had visited on occasion, but compared with Robert, he knew little about them and their lives. This was also due to the larger age difference.
When Oriole was nine, news came to the family that his brother Julian, who had been an Auror, was killed in surveillance of a suspected Death Eater; a man who claimed to have been under the Imperius curse during the reign of the Dark Lord. Both George and Olivia were able to transfer back to London. They ended their contract on their house in Los Angeles and returned to England.
At Julian's funeral, Oriole made his first friend. His brother's girlfriend had been several years younger, and also the oldest in her family. Her younger sister's name was Sharona, and she was a year older than Oriole. At the gathering after the ceremony, Oriole had been sitting against the wall, looking slightly sad and lost. An energetic girl with curly brown hair had approached him and introduced herself. She didn't seem to mind that Oriole didn't often say anything; she talked so much there were very few silences.
The year before Sharona went off to Hogwarts, the two of them were together at least once a week. When Sharona got her letter, she promised to write him, though that didn't make Oriole any happier about her leaving. Without her there, he didn't have much else to do at his family's London house, now empty without his brothers, so he turned back to books. If he couldn't be having fun with other people, he could be having fun with imaginary people and historical people instead.
Oriole was ecstatic when he got his letter the following year. Laden with all of his brand new supplies, he set out on the Hogwarts express. Though he looked for his friend, the train was large and he lost hope. He ended up in a compartment of other first years, though he didn't speak with them at all.
Oriole found himself sorted into the same house as Sharona, and she remained his best friend at school, though she had friends her own age and wasn't always around. He spoke little to anyone else, unsure of himself and not quite knowing what to say.
During his second year, the Boy Who Lived came to school. Oriole loved watching this boy, who had defeated He-who-must-not-be-named so soundly. He wished that he could be that brave, like Harry Potter. The second and third years proved exciting and slightly scary as He-who-must-not-be-named attempted to steal the Sorcerer’s Stone, said to grant immortality, as well as the opening of the Chamber of Secrets. During his fourth year Sirius Black, an escaped convict was on the loose, and the school was on high alert. Oriole progressed in his studies, always near the top of his class.
During his fifth year, the tri-wizard tournament was held at Hogwarts. Too young to enter himself, Oriole wasn't disappointed that Cedric Diggory was to be the Hogwarts Champion. Oriole was quite upset when news of his death reached the school after the final task. After this death, the Ministry set in, appointing teachers. Other than the horrible summer camp incident, in which Cho Chang met her demise, it has been fairly quiet around the school.
Now in his seventh year, Oriole is taking several classes, preparing for his NEWTs. He hopes to become a healer at St. Mungo's after school. He is still in contact with Sharona, who owls him regularly. Other than her, he is still not very sociable, though he is on good terms with several people in his house and his classes.
Personality: Oriole has always been shy and reclusive. He is ill at ease in large groups of people, especially if he has to give a presentation or talk to them all at once. He is quiet and very rarely raises his voice, though if provoked, he will fight back. He does not have many friends or people he is close to, and he wishes that he might, though he doesn't always know what to say to others.
In his classes, Oriole does very well, though not the top of his class. His best subject is potions, followed by charms and herbology. He also likes potions the best, finding Professor Snape to be an excellent teacher. He rarely ever speaks in class unless called upon, and is usually among the first to hand in tests.
Within his house, Oriole is on friendly terms with his room mates, though he doesn't often go out of his way to hang out with them. He spends much of his free time either in his room playing with his geckoes or outside during nice weather either reading or drawing.
Because he was teased and tormented by the children at his Muggle school, Oriole is always a bit wary of other people. He doesn't like having to make the first move in reguards to getting other people's attention or in introducing himself. He is often at a loss for words when trying to talk to these people; because he never socialized when he was younger, he finds himself to not be very good at it now.
When he is out of school, Oriole wants to become a healer. He is very good at potions especially, and feels like the job of healer would well compliment his skills. Also, it means that most of the people he'd have to interact with would be on a strictly professional level.
This year in particular, Oriole has been working on his social skills. He is trying to be more open as well as speak up when he has something he wants to stay, instead of fearing rejection. It is a slow process, but he has made slight progress, especially within his own house. He admires people like Harry Potter who are brave enough to do what is right without the fear of humiliation and rejection.
Appearance: Oriole has shaggy brown hair, almost down to his shoulders in the back, cut slightly shorter in the front. Hair is constantly falling into his eyes, and it has a slight wave to it. He has deep brown eyes which show what he is feeling quite plainly. Having past the stage for pimples, his skin is clear. He has slightly thin lips and rarely ever smiles. He is not one to smile unless he truly means it.
Body wise, Oriole could be described as too thin. He rarely exercises or works out and as a result has little or no muscle, especially in his arms. His ribs show slightly underneath his skin as well as his hip bones. He is also decently tall, standing at 6'2" and looks quite gangly. His arms look as if they are too long for his body, with large hands and slender fingers.
When Oriole walks, he is in the habit of slinking by other people, trying to be noticed as little as possible. He is most afraid of being tormented as he was at Muggle school. His step is either very quick if he is hurrying or quite slow if he is not. He wears the standard Hogwarts uniform while at school, and usually wears a t-shirt and jeans underneath a simple black robe when he is not.
What makes your character different: There is nothing really different or special about Oriole. He is a normal boy, though shy around those he is unfamiliar with. He has a Muggle tattoo. He also has his apparation license.
What does your character thinks about Dumbledore: Oriole respects Dumbledore as a wizard and a professor. He doesn't know why Dumbledore seemed to vanish, but thinks it must be fore a good reason. He admires Dumbledore for fighting against He-who-must-not-be-named, as his brother was killed by a potential Death Eater.
Third Years to Fifth Years: (What are the electives your character is taking? Or what classes did you take when in these years?)
Sixth Years and up: Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Herbology, Charms, Care of Magical Creatures
Special Requests: none
Sample: Oriole sat in the house common room, text books spread about him, a blank parchment occupying the space on the table before him. He had finished all of his homework for the day, excepting an essay for Charms. Looking across the table, his two geckoes were tumbling about in their transport case. He sometimes found it easier to study if they were about, occasionally sneaking looks at them while reading or writing.
Setting the parchment aside, he picked up a parchment that had been written on. It was a letter from Sharona, one that he had not yet answered. She was working with magical creatures for the Ministry, her specialty being kneazles. He hadn't thought of a way to respond to her letter yet.
Leaning back on the chair, Oriole reread the letter. The usual greeting and relaying of facts was at the beginning, but this letter contained something Sharona usually didn't write about. She was dating with a man several years older than her named Brian, who was a Muggle. Oriole had no idea where she had met him, though she did have Muggle relatives.
A jolt of jealousy went through him as he read the letter for the 4th time. He knew that this boyfriend probably wouldn't last long, as most Muggle/witch Muggle/wizard relationships do. Though there was that possibility... Oriole shook his head to clear his thoughts. He should respond to her soon, so that she wouldn't worry about him.
Picking up the parchment, Oriole thought about how to begin the letter. "Dear Sharona" was how he usually started. That would do. Scrawling that onto the parchment, he didn't know what to write next. Sighing softly, he set the parchment aside and picked up a clean one. Time to start the Charms essay.
