Name: Jared Miller
Year: Third
House: Hufflepuff
Bloodline: Jared is a half blood but for all he knows, he is a Muggle born. He was adopted as a baby and raised by a Muggle couple.
Background: Jared was born into the unhappy family of Stephen and Nicholina Burch. Stephen met Nicholina shortly after he finished his study at Oxford University. They met at a small bookshop, after she caused a stack of books to topple over his head. They became involved and after a long and wonderful three years, they got engaged. Their engagement did not go over well with Nicholina’s family, for they were a magical family of nearly pureblood status. They looked down on Nicholina for becoming so involved with a Muggle man and were shamed even more when she decided to turn her back on her magical heritage. Nicholina had had enough of the Magical/Muggle conflict and concluded the only way for her to ever be happy was to let go of her roots and start a new life. Her parents, being enraged by the idea that their daughter was to spend the rest of her life as a Muggle, decided to take matters into their own hands.
One day, while Nicholina was out looking for a Muggle job, they paid Stephen a visit. They revealed to him everything about Nicholina’s past, expecting him to turn away from her completely. On the contrary, the only thing he was upset about was that she didn’t tell him herself. Stephen didn’t think being a witch made Nicholina any less of a person, but that didn’t stop her parents. They had their minds set on breaking the engagement, so they went as far as they could under Ministry law. They performed a memory charm on Stephen, causing him to lose all recollection of Nicholina and their life together. While he was still in a daze they sent him packing and he went back to his own apartment, never to be seen by them again. Nicholina’s parents created a fake letter and left it for her. When she arrived home she was utterly heartbroken. She couldn’t understand what caused him to leave. She went into seclusion, hiding from everyone she knew. She was nothing without Stephen and she couldn’t bear to go on with a normal life.
Little did anyone know that in about eight months, Nicholina would die in childbirth in a Muggle hospital. She gave birth to her son, was able to look into his eyes and whisper the name Jared with her final breath. Without Nicholina, Jared was completely alone, seeing as no one knew about him. He was given up for adoption when he was four months old. His new parents became Josephine and Christopher Miller, who had been married for ten years and were unable to have a child on their own. They gave him the middle name Nathaniel and raised him with love and care. They never told Jared of his real parents. He knows nothing of his true origins and is completely unsuspecting that Josephine and Christopher are not really his birth parents.
In all other aspects of life, Josephine and Christopher have been wonderful parents to Jared. Growing up, he was always showered with love and affection. He received most of what he asked for, but was never greedy enough to ask for too much. He wasn’t raised to hold that sort of spoiled attitude. His family had money, though a person could never tell by looking at them. They didn’t think it was classy to show off one’s wealth. Jared tended to be well liked as a child, except for the few people that considered him nerdy. He was never a member of a popular crowd, however prominent that can be among ten years olds.
Those who were his friends truly thought him to be a wonderful person. Jared liked having a small group of friends he could count on and didn’t care so much about image. If he liked someone, he liked them. Nothing more really had to be said or done. He was never one for sports, although he tried several different times. He tried soccer and tennis, golf and swimming, but he just wasn’t cut out for a lot of physical activity. He preferred things that challenged him mentally and didn’t leave him with sore muscles. When he was seven years old, he started playing the clarinet. He would get very frustrated when all he could do was make it squeak but he didn’t give up and he was playing in the school band within a year. Jared was always fond of music and he was proud to be able to create it.
By the time he was eleven he’d received his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts, but was not so keen to go at first. It was a concept that baffled him. For being so young, he did have a good sense of reason and it really confused him that such a place could exist. His parents did not want to be a part of his decision, but they were leaning towards having him attend the school. After much thought, he decided it would be a good idea and he was fully supported by his parents.
When he arrived at Hogwarts, he kept to himself. New situations tended to make him shut away from people. He was nervous that hw wasn’t going to do well with magic and people would think he was odd for not knowing anything about the magical community. As his first year progressed, he started to realize that there were other people at Hogwarts just like him: Muggleborns that didn’t know anything about magic until they got their letter. This knowledge helped him to open up and start making friends. Most of his friends were in his own house, as he was still a little afraid to talk to those who weren’t. As time went on he learned to love Hogwarts and everything about it, but that didn’t stop him from being happy to go home every summer.
Personality: Jared is quite the introvert. New situations and new people cause him to shut right up. When he is around a lot of people he doesn’t know, Jared usually tries to become part of the scenery, hoping to go unnoticed. He hates being called on in class and being put on the spot, unless he volunteers to talk. He has a difficult time asking questions and making complaints. He usually keeps to himself and very seldom can be heard speaking. Until he gets to know someone, that is. Once Jared is comfortable with a person his is wildly expressive and can get a little over-enthusiastic. When he knows a person well, he is not afraid to tell it like it is and he loves his friends for being exactly who they are and nothing else. He doesn’t enjoy people that have a false personality. He thinks that if people can’t like you for who you are, they don’t deserve your attention.
He is very goal oriented, always wanting to do his best at everything. He doesn’t want to be the very best, but he wants to be sure that the outcome of his efforts is the best he can do. He can be easily disappointed with himself and comes down hard on himself when he thinks he hasn’t done a proper job on something. He is afraid of failure but knows that he can do most of what he puts his mind to, as long as it involves little physical exertion. Jared also has a fear of bats, stemming from one horrible night as a child when a bat decided to join him on a midnight trip to the toilet. He is also allergic to most fur/feather covered animals. This being discovered when he dove face first into the fur of his neighbor’s cat at the age of three.
Appearance: Jared is not fat, but he does have a little extra flub here and there. It mostly appears in his stomach area, like stubborn baby fat that just won’t go away. He stands at about 5’ 10’’ which helps balance out his little bit of chub. His eyes are a light hazel that appear to be slightly speckled with green. He has brown hair with subtle, natural red highlights spread through it. His hair isn’t long, but it is grown past his ears, making him look just a bit scruffy. He usually wears whatever he is comfortable in: sweats, big t-shirts, shorts. The color green is prominent in his wardrobe. When he is around those he doesn’t know, he tends to dress nicer. Long pants, usually khaki, button down shirts or polos, nice shoes. It’s not that he is trying to make an impression but he likes to look nice sometimes.
What makes your character different: Jared is different because of the two extremes of his personality. Terribly shy on one hand and then sweet and out going on the other.
What does your character think of Dumbledore? Jared doesn’t really have a solid opinion on Dumbledore, as he has never had the chance to learn much about him.
Special Requests: None.
Pets (if any): None, he is allergic to all of the accepted pets.
Sample: Jared Miller felt quite relieved to get off the Hogwarts Express after such a long and uneasy trip. He had tried desperately to be in a compartment by himself, but there were so many students he was forced to sit with other people. He didn’t say a word the entire trip. The only sound that emitted from him was a soft clearing of his throat when a fellow student sat on the left side of his robe.
He followed the crowd of first years down the path to the lake. He was reluctant to lave all of his things on the train. What if they forget my trunk?, he thought, full of anxiety. He knew that he would never make it at Hogwarts if all of his possessions were lost. He waited in the clump of new students as they started to board small boats at the bank of the lake. When it came time for him to get in one of the wooden boats, he gripped the sides tightly with both hands and slid his legs, one by one, slowly onto the floor. He would be been destroyed if he had fallen into the water and that was the reason he held on for dear life all the way across the lake. When he finally reached the opposite shore, his mouth dropped open. The whole crossing he had been terrified to open his eyes and did not see the majestic castle growing in the darkness. Observing it for the first time he was blown away by the sheer size of it. He had only seen places that big in photographs.
He rejoined the first year herd as they made their way up to the castle and to the entrance of the great hall. He listened very carefully to every syllable that came from the witch who was now speaking to them. He certainly didn’t want to make any mistakes before he’d even had his first day. He decided he’d better try to fix his hair, in case the crossing had made it lay the wrong way. Not having a mirror, Jared could only guess which way looked best. Just as he was smoothing down the back of his head, the great doors in front of him swung open and the group of first years started pouring into the hall.
As amazed as Jared had been to see the outside of Hogwarts, every thought escaped him as he entered the Great Hall. He couldn’t decide where to look first. His eyes darted in every direction, trying to absorb every image they could. They flew over tables of students watching the first years; some faces were smiling wonderfully while some seemed to be snickering. He was so busy pouring over all the little bits and pieces of the Hall, including a ceiling that utterly perplexed him, he didn’t realize things were happening around him. When the rest of the first years came to a stop, he wasn’t paying any attention and crashed right into the girl directly in front of him. He hit her with a strong enough force that she lost her balance and nearly landed in the lap of a student sitting at the table nearest them.
No matter how hard he tried at that moment, Jared could not manage to melt into the floor. He saw several people laughing and assumed it was at him. The student at the table help stabilize the girl and she turned around, glaring at Jared. He mumbled something that was meant to be ‘sorry’, but it came out as, “sornmygh…” He was trying to hide his increasingly red cheeks when he heard a woman’s voice echo over the sea of students.
Jared listened as another voice began to sing. It was, apparently, a song about the different houses at Hogwarts. Whoever it is, they’re a bit flat… Jared thought, as the song ended. He watched the best he could as students were being called up one by one to try on what appeared to be a very worn, old hat. His view of the scene was obstructed by a few taller students, so he couldn’t tell who or what was now shouting out the names of houses, or who had sung that interesting song. Soon enough, it was time for his chance. “Miller, Jared!” was all it took for every ounce of comfort and security to seep out of Jared’s system.
He was trembling as he made his way to the front of the thinning group, loathing every second that people were watching him. He wanted to close his eyes, but he knew he would never make it up the stairs that way. After a slow march up to the stool he turned around, nervously sat down and shut his eyes tightly. He wanted to leave them closed until everyone was gone. He felt small drops of sweat starting to develop on the back of his neck. Then he felt the hat being placed on his head, and almost fell off the stool when he heard a small voice in his ear. He could still hear the rest of the students, and he noticed a small amount of laughter as he steadied himself on the stool. “Settle down, my boy, it’ll be over soon…” Jared was utterly amazed that this voice was coming from the raggedy, old hat, but knew he would just have to go with it. He really has no preference in a house so he was relying on this hat, of all things, to pit him in the proper place. “Don’t worry…” he heard the hat whisper, “I know just where you’ll fit in…”
