The Plot
It had always been Tracy Turnblad's dream to dance on the Corny Collins Show. When her big chance came, it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. The station manager Velma von Tussle was very racist, which caused a lot of turmoil for Tracy and her friends. Segregation simply wasn't right, and something had to be done. So, they marched. Tracy, Seaweed Stubbs, Motormouth Maybelle, and the rest of the negroes marched, protesting segregation, after Negro Day on the Corny Collins show was cancelled. Unfortunately, the march was unsuccessful and just caused even more of an uproar. So as a backup plan, they crashed the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant.
Velma and her bratty daughter, Amber von Tussle, were distraught at the sudden takeover of their pageant. Everything went sideways, and Inez Stubbs (who wasn't even a council member!) won the title of Miss Teenage Hairspray. Tracy and her friends had succeeded -- the Corny Collins show was then, and forever, officially integrated! Interracial dancing broke out, and became a huge hit. Gone were the days of segregation, though they knew there would still be people out there who disapproved of this motion. Still, the Corny Collins show remained a hit, and life in Baltimore, Maryland was as it should be.
Or, so some would think. So the Corny Collins show became integrated, but what happened after that? What happened to Penny Pingleton and Seaweed? What happened to Amber von Tussle? What happened after the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant? The students of Patterson High went on their summer break not long after, and are just now returning to school. The council members of the Corny Collins show still remain on the show, with the still fresh introduction of negroes mixed in with them. So, what will happen at school this year? Tracy and her new boyfriend, Link Larkin -- also ex-boyfriend of Amber -- are headed on a new adventure with friends Penny, Seaweed and Inez at their sides.
