THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original: Book Character (although she's basically an original)
Full Name: Daphne Queenie Greengrass
Nicknames: Queenie, but only by her sister.
Age: 16
Year: Sixth
Pets (if any):Nope.
House: Slytherin
Blood Lines: Pureblood
Daphne's mother is Isabella Fairfax, whose family is known for their tempers and gay/happy nature. She has one brother, who married a muggle and was denounced as a blood-traitor.
Daphne's father is Stephen Greengrass. He also has a brother and a sister who are fraternal twins. All three siblings are already married off.
Both these bloodlines have been pure for less generations than the Malfoys and Blacks, therefore they are not as rich or influential
Background:
Starting at a very young age Daphne Greengrass has always been taught to uphold the Greengrass legacy; remain neutral. Her mother never had much time for her, becoming pregnant yet again when Daphne was only two. However, her father was a different story. Recognizing the brilliance of Daphne even when she was only a toddler, Stephen Greengrass began teaching Daphne how to care for only the family right away. Daphne’s mother, Isabella Fairfax, protested weakly, but being pregnant, she was extremely tired and could not put up much of a fight.
When Asteria was finally born, Isabella became even busier, and saw Daphne less and less. Her father was also mostly working, going out before Daphne woke up and coming home after she fell asleep. Finally, at the age of four and a half, Daphne was pronounced ready to learn to read, and every Saturday morning her father taught her gravely. She learned fast, and within three months could finally read her favourite picture book.
This is owl. Owl likes that. Owl can see in the night. Owl…
Also in that year, -though Daphne didn’t understand it until later- Stephen Greengrass wanted to start with Asteria’s education. However, Isabella refused, and without pregnancy to stop her she was a force to be reckoned with. They had fights, duels, and fearsome shouting matches, finally showing Isabella’s maiden side. At last, the couple reached a compromise, and Stephen promised not to start instructing Asteria until she was five.
Seeming to inherit more of her mother’s nature than her father’s, it was not surprising that Asteria liked her mother more, therefore monopolizing all of Isabella’s time. Daphne was only a child, and children craved attention, so Daphne started taking longer naps so she could wake up earlier or stay up later to see her father. On the weekends, Daphne listened even more attentively and tried her hardest to learn the things her father taught her. She also worked extremely hard during the week so that on Saturday she should have something to show her father.
It was soon that Daphne’s sister, Asteria, became old enough to play with. Having no real friends of their own, the two sisters grew close bonds, and it was soon after that Daphne started teaching Asteria everything she knew. However, Daphne often became annoyed at Asteria’s lack of progress, which resulted in many shouting matches between the two. Actually, it was more like shouting on Asteria’s end and insults on Daphne’s.
When Asteria finally became five, Stephen also started to teach her. Daphne of course, got insanely jealous and became rather resentful of her younger sister for a while. Soon however, Daphne came to understand more, and by the time she was eight, Daphne hardly ever became jealous of her sister again. The two once again had a great relationship, though it would be far from perfect, for both sisters would never really forget Daphne’s resentment filled year.
Pre-Hogwarts
All her life Daphne’s been taught etiquette, speech, and writing. She’s attended many pureblood functions in which she interacted with other children, or stayed and attempted to understand what her father was discussing with the other adults. Her father warned her that she must never offend anyone important, for their standing as a neutral family was precarious. Daphne’s always had a wild imagination, but when she told Draco once about the things she fabricated, and he laughed at her, knowing that she couldn’t do anything back to him, she vowed to never tell anyone about them again.
Because of the fact that her parents had hardly any time for her in Daphne’s first five years, she also became fairly independent. She began to read to pass time when there was no one to play with, and no parent to talk to, however as time passed she became hooked on books. But only very interesting books. They were fiction of course, with the occasional history book, and from them Daphne learned about the way people worked.
At the age of seven her father got a promotion at work, and was able to stay home longer. He began teaching her more, all the interesting things, and she came to love him more with every passing year. However, he warned her that she must never show any of her interests to anyone, lest they use it against her.
By the time Daphne was nine, she had finally learned to curb her wild imagination into thinking up of plots and diversions. Daphne’s father also started to teach her strategic thinking. At age ten, Daphne started to officially learn how to hide her emotions, but she had still not mastered it by the time the Hogwarts letter arrived. In pureblood functions, Daphne also stopped going to play with the other children, and instead stayed with her father, trying to figure out the hidden meanings of what people were trying to say around her. When it was finally time to attend Hogwarts, Daphne was not allowed to cry as she waved her family goodbye, though she very much felt like it. She found a bathroom stall to sniffle a bit, before going back to her compartment and reading for the whole journey.
First Year
During her first year, Daphne was sorted into Slytherin, though the sorting hat did debate for an instant whether to send her into Ravenclaw. She sat with Blaise and Millicent for meals, and they often did their homework together. They were almost friends. Classes were fine, though Daphne quickly found out that compared to others; her power level was not very high. She had to depend on intelligence and technique to pull her through. She excelled in Potions and Astronomy, but struggled in Transfiguration, Herbology, and Flying. Because of the ridiculous teachers, History of Magic she privately learned, but DADA was simply too hard for her. She was taunted many times by the people of her house, and often had to find somewhere private to have a good cry. When she heard about Harry Potter rescuing the mudblood from the troll, Daphne was greatly moved. She couldn't help secretly wishing that it was her in that stall and not that Granger girl. She attended every Quidditch game, but found them dull and rather unworthy of her time. At the end of the year however, she rather resented Harry Potter, for stealing what should have been rightfully Slytherin's. She also noticed that Quirrel never returned, and wondered what happened to him.
Second Year
Second year didn't much concern Daphne, except that it was rather annoying to have such early curfews. She checked out books to read in her dorm, but the other chattering girls in there rather distracted her. She thought Lockhart was a fake who simply bribed others to repeat his story, but she was sure others suspected, so never made a move. She simply watched and waited. The Slytherin heir was interesting, but never did anything very interesting other than take the Weasley girl. What kind of torment for mudbloods was petrifaction?!? Daphne rather thought that anyone with a brain could tell it wasn't Harry Potter. She was extraordinarily surprised that Potter was a parselmouth of course, but with all the purebloods linked as they were, she told herself she shouldn't be. Besides, she was pureblood; Daphne did not really have to worry. Then, when somehow Gryffindor won yet again when Slytherin was clearly in the lead Daphne decided to learn everything about Harry Potter that she possibly could.
Third Year
It was that year that Daphne had finally mastered the blank expression. She took Arithmacy and Runes as her electives, and one of the top students in her class. Daphne secretly suspected that Hermione Granger cheated, after all, how else could a mudblood beat her? Asteria also came to Hogwarts, and the two sisters met up whenever they could to talk. Finally, with a competent teacher for DADA, Daphne found out that she was terrible at the subject. When Professor Lupin -whom Daphne discovered was a werewolf thanks to Snape- brought out the boggart, Daphne absolutely refused to stand in front of it. However, later, privately, she tried, and was reduced to tears at the image of her dead father. When Daphne got home for Summer Holidays, she specially requested to be trained in Medi-Magics. Her father finally consented.
Forth Year
The black haired girl was furious when Harry Bloody Potter somehow got into the tri-wizard tournament, and she was absolutely sure it was Dumbledore's doing. However, the first task was inspiring, and Daphne quickly set her sights on learning how to duel efficiently. She knew her power level was average at best, so instead she went for creativity. At the Yule Ball, she went with someone from Drumstrang, and they had an instructing discussion about Bulgaria. She told him she’d be his parchment-pal. Then, the most shocking and horrifying news of all came from Potter‘s mouth- the Dark Lord was back!
Fifth Year
During the summer of that year Daphne stepped up her training, and her father agreed. After all, the Dark Lord could be very dangerous in trying to convince neutral families in joining him. And even if he wasn't really back... it was obvious some type of war was going to happen. Dumbledore was after all, a powerful wizard, and if he defected... The school year was pretty calm though, Daphne felt that she did alright in O.W.L.s. As a pureblood, Daphne's family was able to buy their way out of Ministry school, so the summer didn't much concern them.
Personality:
To most, Daphne is usually calm and collected, not to mention extremely cold to everyone. When she does talk, she is often very sarcastic. Daphne does have a thoughtful side, but not many people see the good in it. Mostly, she uses this side to extract elaborate revenge.
She loves to read and learn, but doesn't like to work hard. Daphne will mostly only read things of interest rather than things for school. Because of her love for reading, Daphne has learned a great many things about human philosophy; however not having friends almost all her life limits her understanding of emotion. She also loves subtly and hidden meanings, and is a stranger to crass terms. Daphne likes to think before she acts, and values intelligence highly. She is not very fond of violence unless it is with the tongue.
Daphne is also very arrogant in a way. She thinks herself always right, and hates to admit she's wrong. Par example, Daphne thinks most of the population idiots for believing the Ministry blindly yet she follows her father unquestionably. She often tends to underestimate people, and is actually a little prejudice though she tries not to be.
Miss Greengrass cares very much for her family, though she doesn't show it. Daphne would do anything for them and is very protective of her sister. She also likes politics because of the dangerous challenge, but is still not very good at it yet.
Appearance:
Daphne Greengrass is fairly normal for an aristocrat: high cheekbones, long curved nose, and carved features. However, her high forehead on her oval shaped face keeps anyone from calling her beautiful. What has always been able to make an impression are her pale blue eyes, as light as the ice and twice as cold. Even when partially hid by her long eyelashes, with a glance she can communicate exactly what¡¯s going around in her mind, and it isn¡¯t pretty.
Her slim figure might possibly make her attractive, but she is also rather short at 5'1". She is not considered curvy as her breasts and hips are rather small. However, she has a way of moving that makes her seem alluring. Her light -almost pale-skin, enhances this look. The confidence of her stride and the slight tilt of her chin simplyradiates that she knows she has nothing to be ashamed of.
Straight black hair of no particular style marks Daphne's fashions sense- which is almost none. Having never quite understood the particulars of 'ins' and 'outs', nor how to predict them, Daphne instead opts for conservative, traditional clothes. However, that is not to say Daphne has no sense of style, she simply always dresses for elegance and grace instead of beauty and show. Her robes are often sewn with subtle silver lining to draw attention to movement and flair.
What makes your character different: She's cold and uncaring, and doesn't think much of 'friendship'.
What does your character thinks about Dumbledore: Very conflicted. She used to respect him a great deal because of his magical power and intelligence, but has always wondered why he remained he Headmaster of a school instead of Minster. Daphne thought it was because Dumbledore wanted to influence the new generations of magical prodigies (because Hogwarts only accepts the best) but after he fled the school, she is not so sure. In addition, she is resentful of his favour to Gryffindors. Trice the Slytherins had the House Cup within their palms, only to have Dumbledore snatch it away at the last instant.
Also, Daphne feels like the Headmaster handled the situation with the Dark Lord and the Ministry all wrong, and the only reason she can think of for him to act like that is to show that he was a 'Gryffindor'. She has already seen him use Slytherin cunning before (for she did not for one second believe that Dumbledore could have possibly missed all those things that Potter won house points for), so why not use Slytherin cunning to gain better results instead of acting like a foolish Gryffindor? She is confused by him, disdainful of him, but also acknowledges that he would be a fearsome enemy.
Third Years to Fifth Years: Daphne took Arithmacy and Ancient Runes for her electives and all the base courses.
Sixth Years and up: N.E.W.T.- (Is Snape still teaching? 'Cause Daphne doesn't make it into Potions if he is. She only got a EE) Potions, Transfiguration, Astronomy, Charms, Herbology, Arithmacy, Runes, and DADA.
Special Requests: None I think...
Sample: Middle of Fifth Year
Daphne Greengrass glided into the Slytherin common room, ignoring the stares and murmurs with practiced ease. As she walked, her ice blue eyes slid from person to person, taking in everything that could possibly cause her harm. After all, one did not remain neutral and alive long without being alert.
Finding nothing alarming, Daphne nodded in satisfaction and seated herself at a lone table in the corner of the common room, smirking slightly as she took out her transfiguration text. Taking no notice of the menacing skulls on the damp, grey walls, the girl once again felt in her book bag; this time removing a piece of parchment and a long, feathered quill. She breathed in the parchment’s scent, the acrid tang of musk and wood… the scent of her father. She couldn’t help but smile a little.
Placing the parchment & quill beside her textbook, she flipped open the book to a random page. Blowing a stray strand of coal black hair out of her eyes, she bent over her things, looking in all innocence as if she were starting on her homework. And she would have to soon, Daphne reminded herself, transfiguration did not come easily to her.
Then… she started to listen. Not to things like the scrape of various chairs against the floor as they were pushed out, nor the cackle of the sizzling fire as it burned up the supply of never-ending wood, but to the words. Not many listened as she did, with intent and purpose; it seemed that everyone most people were impatient, too self-absorbed and busy to really listen to others. Their reactions to Umbridge’s speech were evidence enough of that.
This was part of the reason why she liked Slytherin, because everyone here watched out for things like that. Even close friends, such as she and Blaise, were always guarded against each other, and often tried to coax information out of the other.
Close friends…
For the briefest of moments, an image flashed across her mind, something she had seen just the day before. It was of Potter and his friends, sitting at the Gryffindor table, chattering and laughing happily. Daphne paused, and waited for the contempt, the bitterness, or even curiously that usually came when she thought about that group. Instead- a pang of longing hit her. The aristocrat blinked, and leaned back against the uncomfortable but elegant chair, a frown marring her young features. Longing?!? That… was surprising.
Or maybe not so much, the black haired girl thought as she slid her pale eyes sideways, privately evaluating Draco Lucius Malfoy. The Malfoy heir was currently strutting around like a peacock, crudely imitating Harry Potter’s latest blunder with Umbridge to his thugs.
Light-skinned, almost pale fingers drummed softly against the hard, wooden tabletop as Daphne thought about this new revelation. It would explain why Malfoy was so obsessed with the Boy Who Lived, the heir of one of the biggest fortunes in Britain was jealous. And of friendship no less!
A sneer crossed Daphne’s features as she thought about this, could the Malfoy idiot get any more pathetic? How dare he get carried away with this notion of… friendship. It was just a phase, just as believing in Mesme as a small child had been a phase… it would pass. She knew better, he knew better, how dare he disgrace Slytherin! It was rather a shame that no one dared to oppose the rich, Malfoy heir.
However, as it was… her hand darted out, lightly snatching up the long featured quill. It was time to write to her father.
Just then, the door to the Slytherin common rooms grinded open, revealing a young, brown-haired boy who was alternatively panting and heaving long breaths. “Help! Montague’s stuck in the cabinet and-”
Malfoy was already there, shutting the boy up with a glare and motioning for him to lead the way. The boy gulped, and then nodded, running off, with Malfoy trailing after him.
Daphne’s thin lips twisted into cruel smirk as her delicate fingers gently dropped the quill. Stuck in a cabinet eh? Her father could wait, this she had to see.
