THE CHARACTER
Book Character, or Original: Original
Full Name: Emilia Sara Kinkade
Nicknames: Em- This is what she insists that people call her, as she thinks that Emilia is too long and fancy.
Emmy- This name is only used by her family. Her younger sister could never say Emilia, so this is what she called her.
Age: 11 (February 13, 1985)
Year: First
Pets (if any): None
House: Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor
Blood Lines: Emilia is a Muggleborn. She inherited her talent from her grandmother, who secretly worked as an alchemist before her death, and studied extensively to find a simple method of turning metal into gold.
Background: Before her eleventh birthday, Emilia was considered to be a relatively normal girl. Born as the second daughter of Lucas and Audrea Kinkade, she was brought up in Norfolk, England, living in an apartment above her family's bookshop. She has two sisters, fifteen-year-old Brittany and five-year-old Elizabeth.
Growing up as the middle child was always a struggle for Emilia. Between perfect, popular Brittany who succeeded in everything she did, and Elizabeth who had been born blind, Emilia was often starved for attention. She never had many friends growing up, as she was considered to be a 'freak' due to all the strange incidents that seemed to happen when she was around. It all started on that fateful day in first grade, when her class had been invited to a school assembly in the gymnasium. She was sitting in the front row, directly in front of the principal, who was in the middle of a particularly boring speech. She had started to talk to the girl beside her, and the principal -who had a very cruel sense of humor and seemed not to notice that the rest of the school had been talking as well- asked her to stand up and tell the school what she had been saying. She was so embarrassed and so angry, all she could do was glare at the principal. The next thing she knew, his toupee had jumped off his head and flown across the room. As he tried to regain his composure, he was lifted up and was left to hang on a basketball hoop. Emilia was of course, shocked. She knew that it was her fault that the principal's toupee was now turning cartwheels in the air and the principal himself was yelling at someone to find a ladder, but she wasn't exactly sure how she had done it. She decided that it would be best for her to go, so off she ran. However, seeing her missing, the teachers managed to put two and two together, and pretty soon the word spread that she was responsible. From that day forward, Emilia became a friendless loner.
It was because of this loneliness that Emilia first became interested in reading. Living above a bookshop meant that there was always a large supply of books in the house, but Emilia had never really been interested in them before. Now, with nothing else to do, reading became her favourite pastime and escape from reality. Pretty soon, Emilia had read all the books she owned, and was moving on to the longer novels that her parents sold in their shop. She read more books in a week than most children her age did in a month. Pretty soon she could tell you a fact about almost anything. She knew how to tell an alligator from a crocodile, she could name the six wives of Henry VIII, and she could define almost anything without using a dictionary. She had developed an obsession with knowledge.
Now, although the incident in first grade was the biggest thing to indicate Emilia's magical talent, it wasn't the only thing. There were other little happenings that made her parents begin to wonder, such as doors opening and closing by themselves, and various items floating across the room. Now, they knew that Emilia's grandmother had been a witch, and they suspected that their daughter must have inherited her power. Their suspicions were confirmed just after Emilia turned eleven, when a letter from Hogwarts arrived.
Emilia wasn't quite sure how to feel about her invitation. She was thrilled to have the opportunity to go off and learn magic, and couldn't help thinking about all the new possibilities this gave her. She'd never have to go back to the school where people hated her and called her a freak. Not to mention that now she finally had something about herself that she could be proud of. Of course, magic was one thing that her older sister Brittany couldn't do, and Emilia was glad to finally beat her at something.
However, there were some downsides to going to Hogwarts. For one, it was a boarding school, and she wouldn't be able to see her family except for on the holidays. For another, Brittany had become furious when Emilia had received the invitation and she had not, and was taking this out on her sister. Her usually kind, accepting personality had melted away to reveal someone cold and jealous; and pretty soon, Emilia could hardly recognise her sister. Going to Hogwarts also meant leaving her youngest sister, Elizabeth, behind at home. The two had become very close over the years, and Emilia was very protective of her. She had basically become Elizabeth's eyes, and described everything to her when she wanted to know. Who would do that for her now?
After considering everything, Emilia and her family decided that it would be best for her to go to Hogwarts. So they headed off to Diagon Alley, and Emilia bought her first wand: mahogany and unicorn hair, eleven and a half inches. Now that she had her textbooks, Emilia spent nearly all her time up to September the first reading them and gathering as much information about the Wizarding World as she could. Although she was a Muggleborn, she did not want to be left behind and was determined to prove that she was just as clever as anyone else.
When the day finally came for her to go to Hogwarts, Emilia was incredibly nervous and excited at the same time, as most new students probably are. When she arrived and was sorted into Ravenclaw, she felt pretty satisfied. She could carry on a conversation with these people, and they could understand what she was talking about, and most of them seemed pretty friendly.
And besides, no one would see her as a freak.
Personality: Those who don't know Emilia tend to characterize her as 'that girl who sits in the corner and never talks or smiles.' This is true, as Emilia is very quiet and serious, but there is more to her than that. She is a very deep thinker with unique opinions on everything from pumpkin juice to textbooks, but she is also very kind, generous, and helpful to those whom she can trust. Though she is quiet, she isn't shy and finds it easy to talk about her opinions and speak her mind; but she can be a very private person when it comes to talking about personal things, like her thoughts and emotions. She is also very determined when it comes to proving herself, due to all the time she spent being overshadowed by her oldest sister. She isn't really a noble person and has very little courage, but she can be very protective of her friends and family and will do almost anything to help them. Due to all the books she has read, she is very clever and knows a little bit about almost anything.
However, she also has her bad points. She can be cold at times, and becomes irritated without much effort. She doesn't enjoy waiting, and is distracted very easily, which often leads her to be irresponsible and forgetful. She can be a bit sarcastic sometimes, but -although some tend to take it the wrong way- she doesn't mean any harm by it. She is also very clumsy and can be a real snob when she is really tired or annoyed, and nothing bothers her more than when people try to prove her wrong. (She is very proud of her intelligence, and often can't stand criticism.) But even though it doesn't take much to irritate her, you'd have to do something really horrible to make her angry. And once she is, stand clear of the explosion, because she can really be hurtful. She doesn't hate people on principle, but she will develop a strong grudge against those who really bother her.
As to her habits, Emilia often bites her lips and hums when she is nervous. When she is thinking about something important, her eyes glaze over and she stares off into space. She is not incredibly organized, leading her to forget things or leave them to the last minute, and she is very messy, often leaving her possessions all over the floor. When she is reading or doing her homework, she often pulls on one loose strand of her hair, leading it to be constantly messy.
One of the strangest things about Emilia is that you can never really tell what she is thinking. One moment she will be happy and cheerful, and a few minutes later, she'll be completely serious. She doesn't share her thoughts with many people, but if she chooses to, most are amazed at how much she really does think. Her emotions and moods often switch abruptly, so even though she is relatively calm most of the time, you can never really tell what to expect from her. In a nutshell, she is basically a quiet, clever, completely unpredictable girl who likes to take life one day at a time.
Appearance: Emilia doesn't care much about her looks, so the fact that she is considered to be quite 'plain' has no effect on her. She is tall for her age at 5'4 and is also a bit chunky, but she figures that things will even out as she grows. She has a round face and a fairly neutral skin colour -not pale, but not tanned either-, with very prominent brown eyes and freckles dotting her nose and cheeks. Her hair is strawberry blonde, and is also very thin and wispy. She keeps it cut to her shoulders in a bland, simple style, but often leaves a few strands to hang out in front of her wire-frame glasses. She wears braces, and this is the only aspect of her appearance that really bothers her. (They hurt her gums, as well as making her look as if she has a mouth full of nails.) Because of this she rarely smiles, and when she does they are fairly small and quick.
As to her clothing style, Emilia dresses casually almost all the time. During the week, she wears her Hogwarts uniform, as she is required. On the weekends she favours mostly knitted sweaters and jeans, but otherwise will wear whatever is clean at the time. She can look a bit scruffy, but is usually too absorbed in whatever she is doing to notice.
Emilia tends to walk with her head tilted down, as if deep in thought, and this leads to the majority of her clumsiness. (E.g. She ran into a wall because she wasn't watching wear she was going.) Her walk is actually more of an absent-minded shuffle, though she tends to pace when there is something important on her mind. She often reads while she walks as well, which also leads her to run into things. She doesn't speak often, but when she does, she talks very quickly in an English accent. Sometimes when she wants to say something important, she gets tongue tied from talking so fast. One strand of her hair is always messy, as she tends to play with it as she reads or does homework, and she has tiny cuts on her lips from biting them so often when she is nervous.
What makes your character different: Emilia has very unique views and opinions, and she thinks very deeply about almost everything. She is also very unpredictable, as her moods can change very quickly.
What does your character thinks about Dumbledore: Being a Muggleborn, Emilia knows very little about Dumbledore. The extent of her knowledge is that he used to be the headmaster of Hogwarts, but he left for some reason.
Third Years to Fifth Years: Not Applicable.
Sixth Years and up: Not Applicable.
Special Requests: None that I can think of.
Sample: “Excuse me... Coming through... Hey, watch it will you?”
Pushing and shoving her way through the crowded corridor, Emilia managed to make it out of the train without being trampled. She stepped out of the way as more students came out of the train, and glanced upwards at the clear night sky. It was amazing, really, how quickly all of this had happened to her. Why only a few months ago she had come running home, crying her eyes out due to people tormenting her. She had been boring, ugly and talentless. No one liked her. Well, she thought, smiling to herself, that's all about to change. She, Emilia Kinkade, was a witch. And in her opinion, that was probably the least boring and talentless thing it was possible to be.
Drifting back to reality, she glanced around at her surroundings. Students were everywhere, walking together in laughing groups towards what looked like hundreds of horseless coaches. Was she to follow them? They all looked too tall to be first years, so where was she supposed to go? She got her answer a few seconds later, when a voice called out from behind her “Firs' years! Firs' years, follow me!” She hurried in the direction of the noise and found herself gazing up at a giant of a man, at least twice her height. She instinctively stepped back a bit in case he couldn't see her and walked on her by mistake. However, he began to walk down a steep, narrow path and a whole other group of people -More first years, she supposed- were following him.
A few moments later, Emilia stumbled and nearly fell into the person in front of her, due to the abrupt halt of the giant. “That there's Hogwarts.” he said, pointing ahead at an enormous, brightly lit castle in the distance, standing tall at the edge of a very large lake. Emilia's eyes widened as she stared in awe at the castle. She continued to stare at it, even as the first years were crowded into several small boats that began to move across the lake all by themselves. “I'm going to get lost in there for sure...” she whispered to herself.
They reached the other side of the lake, and were greeted by a stern-looking woman who introduced herself as Professor McGonagall. She led them into an entrance hall that was at least three times the size of her own home, then into a small side chamber where she told them to wait until they could be sorted. As soon as she left, excited chatter broke out among the students, each forming ideas of what it meant to be 'sorted.' Emilia bit her lip and sighed. Sure, she had read bits of her textbooks over the summer, but what if she had to pass some sort of test? Or worse, what would happen if she failed some sort of test. She was in the middle of pondering this when Professor McGonagall returned and brought them into a large room with candles hovering above four long tables, that seated several hundred students. As she proceeded to the front of the room, Emilia noted that the ceiling seemed to open up right into the heavens. No, wait... It's just bewitched to look like that she thought, remembering a chapter of Hogwarts: A History.
A hush had fallen over the school as Professor McGonagall brought out a stool and a dilapidated old wizard's hat with a large rip at the brim. Emilia gazed at it in confusion, until Professor McGonagall unrolled a large scroll of parchment and began to read off the names. She was relieved to see that instead of a magical challenge, all she would have to do was try on the hat and she would be sorted into her house. She grew more nervous than ever, waiting there with all the older students watching as the students were sorted. She bit her lip and absently started to pull at her hair. Soon she was so absorbed in her thoughts that she nearly jumped out of her skin when her name was finally called.
Breathing deeply and doing her best not to faint, she slowly made her way up to the stool, slipped the hat down over her eyes, and waited...
I am not an amazing chocolater... or am I?
